Does a Virus lay dormant if you don't open its program?

Redt5

Say I downloaded a program that I know has a virus in it, as long as I don't open/activate the program it won't do anything right? Is that correct? Otherwise I may have to clear my SSD.

Depends what kind of virus it is. Some will only run on the back of another application, while others will run themselves without you doing anything.

Nothing to serious, ultrasurf and a autoclicker from here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/orphamielautoclicker/

I just downloaded it never opened it and scanned it through virustotal to show my friends that they should delete these programs immediately.

If the program was published after 2015 you don't have to worry.

All programs submitted to sourceforge are scanned for viruses.

If you have a virus in your system from any programs, Windows defender will automatically quarantine the infected files.

Make sure you update the virus definition.

Yeah, funny that now it's more often the case of real, rather than virtual pandemic.

I mean easier to catch a real infection than a virtual.

I edit my posts more often than not
