Pirating games when you don't have a lot of money [discussion]

Jeroen1322

Wow you actually think you are good at deflecting  because you are too damn stupid to come up with a response. I answered why the PC community would be hurt by not paying.

Why do people feel so entitled to play a computer game that they are willing to steal it.

I want to drive a Ferrari but i'm not going to steal one until i can save up enough money to buy it. Maybe i cant afford to see the latest film at the cinema because i am skint this month, do i sneak in? do i pirates a cam rip? no i want until its out on blu ray/itunes and i buy it later when i can afford it

Just because a develop makes a game, it doen't give you any right to play it without paying them. None whatsoever, no excuses as far as I am concerned.

So you can't play it until next month, BIG WHOOP and it will still be the same game in 2 years time when its on sale for 10$ and you can pick it up then if you really cant afford it now

Play something else, go to your friends house to play it, but pirating it is just horrible in my opinion. harm or no harm it is wrong and you shouldn't be doing it

I get it, and don't disagree on a lot of points, ultimately whether or not it is a benefit doesn't make it okay to take and use something you don't have permission for.

My real issue is with people who try to claim they aren't stealing when pirating.

Good we are on the same page :)

Yes, If you are over 20 years old and you still do not pay for games - Then please start doing so. I was without a job for 6 months, and yet still managed to maintain my gamer "affliction". Being over 20 and still pirating is bad, IMO pirating is for you to feel the deal. Kind of like porn: Eventually you will grow away from it (hopefully).

. Higher pirating rates gives devs less motivation to bring games to pc

To a very small extent, as games pirated usually wouldn't even be bought anyways. According to the etics expressed in this article and the worhtyness of cash vs free that most of the time isnt even enough to consider.

This is such a small deal. ? I know theres an even more irrelevant argument below in your quote but I see it wrong or irrelevant.

this discussion is dead. and never took life.

I actually don't pirate games just for the hell of it. I usually have enough to play on my steam account or consoles. I do think however, that pirating things to subvert against specific games and companies is legitimate and I encourage people to pirate games like Simcity 2013 in a direct action protest to draconic practices like always-online DRM, I would pretty much be in the pirate party or hacktivism if I was 1) A Swede or there was any real persecution for Piracy here in Mexico (suffice to say we've got bigger fish to fry here) and 2) If I had the willpower to code or contribute significantly but I don't.

It doesnt matter how you do it. Pirating is wrong. Its like saying "ill go steal a mercedes and pay for it later cause I cant afford it right now" its still stealing.

I don't pirate games. Steam sales are sufficient incentive to buy them.

?

When a dev makes a game under a publisher they are in debt to the the publisher. The Devs only get the money that is made past the amount of debt they have with the publisher. The publisher handles distribution marketing advertising and partnerships. So in the end it'd be about 5% of what the game made in sales.

Well I am too old to game as frequently as I used to.... but when I am to check a new game 1st thing I do is to get it using the pirate way :P If I think that the game is good and that the market price of it responds to the experience I got (and if I have the money) I buy it afterwards...

And thats totally ok with me because of reasons!!! :P just kidding

I feel ok about it because A) If the game sucks its developers should not get my hard earned cash!

Β) If the game is good AND I can affort it I buy it win-win legit...

C) If the game is good BUT I cant affort it no harm done since they wouldnt get any money from me anyway (since I didnt had it in the first place) so I was not a potential client anyway... no harm done as well! AND playing it though makes me participate to the community online raise the game's buz and help spreading the word so I contribute some how anyway so the developers win something out of this even if I didnt have the money (because not having the money and not pirating to play the game means also not contributing to the community of the game or spreading the word... )

P.S Nowadays I do that only using piratebay.. but I am sure there are better sites for pirating games and finding cracks could you PM me some of them or list them here? thnx... and no sh1t I can tell if the site is malicious thnx :)

This is the approach I use (sometimes). I believe most software developers should give you a unlimited trial of their game before deciding to buy it. If you like it then you buy it, if you don't then just delete it off your computer. It really sucks when you think a game is going to be bad ass by playing some limited demo or reading reviews and then you play it and it's actually crap and then you can't return it for some reason.

Play free to play games like Planetside 2, LOL, Dota, play Demos and the such. But don't pirate. There are a myriad of free games that don't have any micro transactions in them. Some are old though but still very good. Try out Pokemon 3D, OpenRA (just google it). Planetside 2 as I have mentioned, Team Fortress 2. The alternative though is to find someone with money and a bunch of steam games and use the Steam sharing feature that just got added. Also emulation is a good way to not pay for games.

The Ferrari Mercedes etc analogies got me thinking.  The case of 'can't afford a car so steal it' is miles away from the 'can't afford a game so pirate it' one.  The COPY of a game in reality can cost nothing whilst the car is an actual physical object .  So car=object Game=Collection of 1s and 0s (which is easily and for no cost copyable).

However I still think pirating is wrong just this argument should not be used.

I pirate games and then buy them quite often, however lately Ive been regretting doing this. Not because I feel guilty over stealing but because half the time I actually buy a game it has some DRM attached or does not work as well as the pirated copy. My best example would be dishonored; I bought the game after finishing it on a pirated copy and the retail version would crash over and over. I uninstalled it and continue to play my pirated copy even though I own a legit version through steam.

pirating because you're poor is a stupid excuse

LoL. Starving because you're poor is a stupid excuse. Go hunt. "/mind blown" :o

Ok, jokes aside. You know, not everybody has 60-70euros (convert it to your own currency) to spend on a video game that will last you for a couple of hours.

I'm very aware that it is still wrong. But you know what? Different people have different  priorities. Deal with it.

That doesn't make it legal or OK.

Stealing is stealing and there is no excuse for it.

And most PC games are really cheap anyways.

Steam gives you 10% off when you pre order a game.

I do exactly what you do. Except I mainly torrent games so that I can see if I like them. For example I torrented Thief, I didn't like it so I deleted it. But I did torrent Borderlands 2, loved it and bought it.
