PHONE COOLING SHOULD BE A THING

I remember seeing the first LTT video about phone water cooling, I remember thinking to myself "yep that'd definetely work" before the video even started. and was quite suprised by how much or how quickly rather, a phone can over heat and thermal throttle. Fast forward to today and I own a samsung s20+ (128gb android 10) and playing games, running discord and even editing video caused the phone to get incredibly hot. Almost hot enough to be concidered uncomfortable, so I grabbed a fairly large chipset heatsink off of an old lga775 motherboard. adding a 12v 40mm fan, some thermal pads, bit of sticky tape and the clear case that came with the phone. I jerry rigged a "cooling case" haha, the 40mm fan went  off tap so I knew it'd keep it at ambient temps no matter the TDP that could possibly come out of the s20+. so I ran some benchmarks using 3dmark's slingshot extreme and came up with some interesting numbers and ill show them below.

 

at the time "high performance mode" was a thing and was of course turned on during testing, but has since been replaced by "advanced processing" now with android 11.

phone was also allowed to cool down to room temp before testing started. each test went for roughly 15 mins.

 

(stock)NO COOLER= 

1st test score= 6614

2nd test score= 5747

clear thermal throttling after(and during you'll come to find) first test, loss of 867 points after just 15 mins.

 

(heatsink, fan & thermal pads)COOLED=

1st test score= 6747

2nd test score= 6570

1st test gained 133 points by handling temps better than the stock first test and lost only 177 points after 15 mins.

 

I want to refine and create a better more sleek version using a small centrifugal fan and low profile heatsink.

just thought id share my experience incase anyone else is experiencing similar issues or is into tinkering and "jerry rigging" per say but also wanting to improve and maybe even come up with something legit that could sell. Because even with every day use i run into heat issues and having to sit my phone on something thermally conductive like a bench but also having to move it because it manages to heat the object beneath it especially if charging.

There are a fair few Phone case coolers already on the market. The reason manufactures don't put more effort into cooling their phones is simply because a majority of users do not game heavily on phones. Most well made modern phones are capable of playing light games, YouTube, social media etc.. without any noticeable performance hit. The CPU may underclock slightly, and the phone will defiantly get warmer, but not to the point that the user would really notice or care.

Quite a bit of the heat comes from the battery, at least in my good 'ol iphone 7 (i know, an iphone, ew, I don't like it either but facetime is important to my fam)

if your used to a slow under performing phone then yeah dont worry lol, but if you like having

yeah that was quite a good bit of kit, wasnt quite as efficient of a fan as i would have hoped for sadly though

yeah my s20+ stops itself from charging if its over 40 degrees celcius, it tends to heat up alot only when charging obviously but i think the charger pumping near 12v into it so i dont blame it haha

yeah i dont mind an iphone either used to run a 6s before i switched so quite a performance difference but iphones have always been reliable to me haha

yes, but even people who buy brand new high end phones usually don't do that because they want to game or edit videos on them, but to get the "new" thing on the market to scroll twitter and facebook with.

i myself have a Oneplus 7T Pro and bought the McLaren edition for extra ram and a cool back panel, but i've never once thought of using it to do heavy tasks.

and at the price of some of the new flagship phones from samsung and apple, it's so much cheaper to buy a laptop or desktop with so much more performance for much cheaper

Phones are literally status symbols at this point. They aren't a big boi productivity or gaming platform. Most people use it for emails, messaging, taking a picture and social media something even a 130$ budget phone can do like a champ. So yeah those 1000$ phones don't focus much on cooling because they know the people that buy those will almost exclusively do what I mentioned above so why bother. The ones that do use it for gaming have their own niche of phones so even less reason for them to care about.

 

My friend used to buy the biggest baddest phone every 2 ish years until he started saving up and get smart with money. When his s9 broke the mi 9t from xiaomi just came out and well he's been using it ever since not notice a difference between his previous higher end phone and this mid ranger for what he does which was a bit of a realitycheck and a 2020 vision moment that he wasted a LOT of money on buying the new big phone of the year :p.

Phone cooling was already a thing since ages ago... Take a look at the iPhone 5 's shell. It's an aluminium casing that passively cools the internals.

Years ago there already were several phones with external active cooling. The fact that OP doesn’t even know the ROG Phone series just astonishes me.

in the original post i think they were refering to liquid cooling. imagine walking around with a liquid cooled phone
