Improving cooling for Amd Ryzen 9 3900X 12-core cpu

Thomas.L

Thanks for stopping by, I am hoping for some assistance in tuning/troublefixing my current cpu-cooling and maybe get some recommendations for upgrades. I upgraded to a 3900X cpu when it came out, and recently replaced the pc-case into a be-quiet, and it's first now I am noticing the noise from the cpu.

Current hardware:

be quiet! 500dx case

ROG Strix X570-F gaming mb

Ryzen 9 3900X cpu

Noctua NH-U9S cooler

So the main issue is that the Noctua seems to struggle getting temperatures down without spinning up the fan to around 1k rpm which makes an incessant noice driving me close to madness. And still then the temperature is around 45C

As you can see from the screenshot the cpu is idling at 1-3% and still temp is 51C... Fan is current spinning at 1100rpm, so to me it seems clear the fan is underpowered? The cpu is currently drawing about 30w which isnt much.

Or maybe there are things I can change to improve cooling? Should this fan be able to cool it better? Maybe I need to reapply cooler-paste?

Or do I need to consider a fan-upgrade? And if so, what would be recommended?

Small note, I did'nt know about this site when I bought the cpu, so I wasn't aware of the cpu-cooler-tier-list, I see my fan is a tier 7 but I don't have enough knowledge of say if this means is a bad choice or not.

Thanks in advance for all tips and tricks.

Dont worry about idle temps. What are your temps in all-core load like Cinebench r23?

That cpu might say it’s only 105w, but the reality is it’s over 200. That’s a tiny heat sink.

I agree with @freeagent That cooler is just a bit small for the CPU. If it was a 120mm Noctua spinning at 1000rpm, you would find it more pleasant to listen to than the 92mm fan.

There are lots of great options. I would recommend a larger Noctua or Be Quiet cooler. They have excellent fans that you would find very pleasant. I would probably go with a Be Quiet unit with Silent Wings 3 fan, assuming you are using Be Quiet fans in that Be Quiet case already. My OCD likes matching products.

You have a nice looking build there and it’s only going to get better with a better cooler.

go with better cooler, that tiny cooler will do fine, but can be very loud as you said.

At stock and in full load it will only consume 140w-150w of power

Either way, that's still a lot of power for that little cooler.
