ThermalTake copied Noctua, but Noctua copied Nidec.

StarsMars

There are several videos out talking about how ThermalTake copied the NF-a12

but when the NF-a12 came out, I thought Noctua was trying to rip from the Nidec/Scythe Gentle Typhoon.

Thoughts?

the Gentle Typhoon has much wider curves in its blades and they're narrower compared to Noctuas. Thermal Takes looks more like the Gentle Typhoon than Noctua's does.

I'm not sure this qualifies as copying altogether, because most engineers will fall back to known design principles. There's only so many ways to efficiently push air with fan blades.

But then you said ThermalTake. You just know they flat out copy pasted the design. It's freaking ThermalTake.

the real difference is the noctua (as Bequiets as well btw) have ridges... basic audio engineering... don't even need to test it, ridges = good, no ridges = bad... I don't understand why not everyone does it, I doubt Bequiet and noctua have a patent on ridges lol...

Noctua’s have their own sterox material for the fan blades that the typhoons lack. (thermaltake copied the material)

They all copy each other.. the first time I saw a Noctua cooler I thought it was a knock off of Thermalright lol. Yet they are still here 😄

Thermaltheif has been around for ages too. Don’t be too hard on them though, Corsair really is not much different then Thermaltake.

My opinion of Thermaltake has always been low. The design stealing is one reason. The commentary from reviewers on their interactions with the company compound it. Knock-offs have always been a thing. They are usually found on places like Wish. I think the issue with Thermaltake is how known they are in the industry and they still do it.  I would be more okay with Thermaltake if reviewers would review the products as knockoffs. When you see an iPhone vs Knockoff iPhone bought from China YouTube video, no one gets mad because you know what you’re looking at. If Austin Evans says, look as this copy cat junk I bought on Wish, no one cares. It’s that Thermaltake is pretending to be legit and people don’t call them on it enough.

Yeah tbh there are plenty of legit companies whose sole business model is to copy the designs of other, larger companies. And frankly, there is nothing wrong with that (as long as it's not patent infringing) as long as they are open about it.

They were so shameless about it too. You know damn well the only reason they have the LCP as a bragging point on the product page is because of the fact that the A12x25 has it as a noteworthy point too.

And we can't forget that ThermalFake went as far as to copy the hub design. The fucking hub design. There's no reason for them to have the metal exposed other than to copy Noctua.

Frankly I'm surprised (but mainly not surprised at all) that they didn't make it a 6-pole motor like Noctua. But that would have required more work. Though it is very funny that these fans have a rated starting voltage of 9 damn volts. That's absolutely absurd.

tbh Noctua fans also use better plastics, they're a lot tougher and take abuse. Not that I throw my PC at the wall, but it's also nice knowing the frame won't snap after the 5th installation.

Thermaltake is just doing advanced homework for when the NF-A12x25 Chromax comes out.
