Tinder's new user agreement - mandatory!

Summary

In the shadow of what should be shortly implemented by WhatsApp, Tinder seems to be following in the same footsteps and making mandatory the sharing of personal data and location.

I couldn't find anything other than a Reddit post as of yet. I assume it was just released and news should pop the following day.

My thoughts

And like WhatsApp I will not accept it being mandatory and will ditch the app. 

If this becomes the trend I see myself deleting pretty much anything that tries to track me with my consent.

I am aware most already do and are just trying to make it legal - Tinder and WhatsApp included - but at least without having my consent there can be consequences in the future but once we do officially agree to it any sort of online privacy will be lost in less than a decade so… Long live Tor…?

One idea for a P2P platform is that all of your own posts are stored on your on PC, and cached in their list on their end. The twist is that it's all encrypted. To "delete", you simply revoke the key that allows friends to view the content. Or, you set a TTL (Time to Live) expiration that requires your friend's PC to re-request a new key for an extended period of time. Essentially, a Deadman's switch; if your PC is offline for a certain length of time, all of your content is no longer available to be viewed.

 

The downside is that your cellphone or PC has to be online for as much as possible. Also, because it's distributed, performance in loading times would vary.

 

So yeah, pros and cons to a P2P approach. But, at least you can control the content in how it's distributed and viewed. It's easy to ghost offline if you want to scrub the history.

 

So Facebook can kiss off!

I have no idea. I'm only just looking at dapps as something other than a passing novelty. I guess if I ever tried to make a dapp dating app, I wouldn't do it with the intent of profiting off it or even maintaining/running it long term. So I'd want to open source all the code and rely on decentralized hosting/maintaining of the actual network while also focusing on text descriptions instead of pictures (popular, I know 😂) and full anonymity beyond maybe age and the city/town they're in. Basically I'd just make a thing that'd be open source, secure, and maintained by the people using the platform rather than by a central entity that'd be profiting off it's products--I mean users. Hopefully that'd be good enough to get people switching to it and eventually killing off traditional/greedy dating apps like tinder?

it's just like people relying on fact checkers that don't really check anything and claim things they don't agree with are "not true" a.k.a. saying it's false without actually saying that it is.

Yea good points about trustworthiness and stealing data but I think the community could maintain that with some kind of trust score maybe?

Yup, basically impossible to circumvent that. Also, it is pretty hard to trust when you can't be sure your friend is actually your friend or a random person pretending to be them. 

 

Things are way more complicated than people realize or bother to think.

I do like that idea for any sort of online interaction. 

An example would be: if I buy things from Amazon ever X days/weeks I could set it up to auto-delete my account if Y days/weeks went by without logging in.

All the data would be kept in my computer and a random hash would be generated by my computer once logged in combining my password with my IP, the website address, my account name on that website and the time of login (or something to that effect). Same for social media and yeah everything online.

Wouldn't that keep third parties from having have access to my data?

 

As for geolocation I think Apple (or was it mandated by the EU?) did something preventing apps from having access without the user's consent…?

A lot of people there are likely not looking for a stable relationship, and of course you got bots and bad actors that want to abuse this or social media in general. Likely some one could get with, but in the way you meet them is also not great when its through an app. Since different intent and views, so if one doesn't do well the meeting in IRL is likely not going to do well either and little attachment to each other? Also how either party could "fake" their first reactions or motive, that might not take long before it breaks, if nothing else is done to make it work.
