I need more fps in my 1440p ultrawide games....

Go to solution Solved by WhitetailAni,

An upgrade to a 3700X or a 5800X might help.

My rig : Ryzen 7 2700x, rtx 2070, 16gb, Rog crosshair viii hero, ssd 240 and hard drive 1tb.

I have bought months ago a 1440p ultrawide 3440x1440p monitor for work. Its great for me. However when gaming, this monstrosity resolution is really killing my fps.

The gpu market is crazy with scalpers all over the place and gpus being overpriced and stuff.

I want to know if theres another thing i could buy to get more fps.

It's one of them.

Look into overclocking it using MSI Afterburner. I have my 1070ti water-cooled and overclocked to push it to its absolute limit. Also download a benchmarking tool, a lot of them are free. Watch the video below to get an idea of how to tweak setting and then benchmark for stability. It is easier than it first appears and you'll enjoy finding out how far you can push the hardware. The GPU has limiters that will cause it to shut down if it is at risk of damaging itself so take it to the silicon's limit.

In the used market, something like a 2080ti? It's a terrible time to buy hardware in general so dont expect much options. May be better to give up graphical quality instead.

Overclocking is the best solution for free. Id try overclocking both parts if you havent already

Im not 100% sure bout overclocking. Theres a lot of missunderstanding bout this field. Im afraid to kill my rig doing that.

It is almost impossible to kill your build by overclocking. Some warranties will be void and it might lower the lifespan but any short term damage will be immediately stopped and your system will shut down. As long as you have good cooling you probably wont even hurt the lifespan that bad. Overclocking is safe in almost all regards and in a way is the best way to get better hardware without paying any money.

Need both for high framerate at 1440p

Sorry, there may have been some snark in my comment, but ultimately you can't expect a 2070 to drive 1440p ultrawide with very high framerate outside of esports games, and you will need a faster CPU to drive that anyway.

You can get a faster CPU to drive frames, but you will need to lower your resolution in order for your GPU to push frames (if it even can, barring some titles).

Look at my post earlier in this thread. It has links to help with overclocking the GPU; software and instructions video.

The CPU has decent IPC, but these guys aren't telling you it lacks the frequency to back it.

So you can OC the Cpu. Simply raising the EDC limit in RyzenMaster will help the Cpu boost harder, mine clocks 4050mhz all else on auto. Generally at default, 3.8ghz with decent temps 3.9ghz.

Need to work on that memory performance. Your Infinity Fabric is locked 1:1 to the memory. You want as much frequency from the memory as possible.

My 2700X is pushing a RTX 2060, pretty much entry level 4K gaming. It responds well to memory clocked 3600mhz 16-16-16 but takes a bit of time training the board and Cpu to go there.

Since this OC approach is free, you can go at it from different angles. You can disable SMT. This will reduce temps and power consumption and may boost performance a little bit.

Some game tweaks can help too. Like lower or disable post processing.

There's plenty you can do without spending money. But a 5600X would probably be an easy 30% increase in CPU performance. That would really help those intense low FPS moments when you're dropping into the 20's.

I just want to point out that upgrading the cpu to a 5800x gave me +20fps on 1440p ultrawide gaming. No joke. Its a lot better now. Thank you.
