If you don't think it meets guidelines, report it please. It may not be expressly tech, but it is very much tech related imo since yk Amazon is one of the top tech companies.

Seeing as Jeff is being replaced by the guy who is in charge of Amazon's server business i would say it is tech news.

My memory is such things often happen because of manipulations of company rules and shares.  It not infrequently has nothing to do with actual company good.  On the other hand I can see Jeff Bezos simply thinking he has way way more money that he can possibly use even for stupid stuff like overpaying for basketball teams, so why is he ruining his health running a company? 

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

@piratemonkey you might want to Edit the OP and add the following: Bezos isn't just stepping down as CEO, he's going to become the new Executive Chairman for Amazon.

 

This is the exact same thing that Bill Gates did when he decided he didn't want to run the day-to-day business of Microsoft.

 

The Executive Chairman is kind of a subordinate role, but also kind of a leadership role for the CEO.

 

I believe the EC also normally leads the Board, if the company has one.

Close but incorrect.  we live amongst a generation who feel that success must be scrutinized because it is not infrequently gotten by nefarious means. Really most generations have been that way.  the last one was different.  Something of an anomaly historically.  This will probably last until people forget again how success and terrible behavior are often related and it happens again.  Then, like this time, people will be utterly horrified by the evil wrought, and it will again be scrutinized until it is forgotten and humanity is LARTed again.  It’s a repeating pattern.

I feel like that's the most true statement. That's often what I see in my friends sentiments. It's also true in its basis imo. Why are Amazon distro centers seeming like a legal sweat shop? Why is Amazon anti union, and goes against unionization strongly? Because they treat workers badly. You know, nefariously

All public companies have boards--they represent the shareholders interest basically, the CEO reports to the board.

Let's be honest here. Most people who say that Jeff is evil and Amazon does terrible things are hypocrites. They say all these things and yet 90% still use Amazon on a daily basis because its to convenient. The fact is the success was created by making a product that everyone wants to use even to the point where people will overlook the poor treatment workers get. Also to compare it to a sweatshop is laughable as in sweatshops they sure as hell don't get 15 dollars and hour. Sure the working conditions aren't great but they definitely aren't compatible to the horrible condition of sweatshops overseas. Anyways I don't believe that Amazon is as successful as it is purely through being shitty to their employees but rather making great products and services.

Let’s be honest here.  you don’t know the man.  Neither do I.  Making assumptive pronouncements about his personal motivations from either of our, or most other perspectives really, is a bit pointless.  This is why my original comment was to an extent a “who knows” sort of thing.  My second reply was a negation of the grumbling about “success” in general.  It’s origin was irrelevant.   Is Jeff Bezos more or less “spotless” than others?  I have no idea.  The comment I replied to seemed to be a complaint that financial success in general is insufficiently respected.  My statement was that such respect while lower than, say, the 80’s is much more in line with historical norms, and there are reasons for that.  The are also fluctuations in the other direction.  The 20’s and the 60’s both come to mind for that.  I am curious as to how regular the waveform is.  I don’t have the perspective to even look for it though.  Your comment seems to me to be more in the neighborhood of “well you’re dirty too”. True enough.  Everyone is dirty.  The old saying that covered this is “the pot calling the kettle black”. Something that has lost meaning since stove blacking isn’t a thing anymore.  The pot calling the kettle black doesn’t mean that the pot is wrong though.

My point is that people say they are upset about Amazon and what Jeff does but most of them still use Amazon as a service. If they really cared they stop using it completely but most people don't. The same with stuff produced overseas in questionable conditions. I think people just like to say they care but not back it up with actual action because thats what most people do these days. It also doesn't help that there are groups that simply assume that anyone who has made alot of money is somehow a bad person. Its not surprising that he is stepping down at 20+ years of running the company, but usually you hear rumors about this sorta thing first or see the person starting up a new company to focus on.

I think he's done good running amazon. I've never understood the hate he gets. His company is definitely overvalued, but still solid. I could list hundreds companies run worse and more unethically than amazon.

Curious how the stock market will react to it over the next day or two.

Its greatly exaggerated. If you look at the actual statistics, his workers get paid higher than average and has lower deaths than average for warehouse work. Its just a lot more profitable to run a story about someone dying in an amazon warehouse than some small warehouse run by a company no one outside the small city has ever heard of.

Did.  He apparently no longer has a “does” according to the article.  So it’s “if they really don’t like it that should boycott even if there’s nothing else to use.  Boycott is the only true complaint..  anything else is a fake complaint” boycott is for sure the most extreme complaint possible, short of, say, rushing the building with torches and pitchforks.  That was what happened to landed gentry very occasionally in the Middle Ages.  I believe Mel Gibson did a movie around the turn of the century about it.  Complaining that people complaining about amazon’s behavior is insufficiently extreme This was about a dude leaving a position though.  As for defense of the wealthy I don’t think it’s like that at all.  I don’t think there is an assumption that anyone who is wealthy is automatically a bad person.  It merely that becoming wealthy while not being a bad person is generally fairly rare.  It requires actual technical innovation, which is not a common thing. Its not surprising that he is stepping down at 20+ years of running the company, but usually you hear rumors about this sorta thing first or see the person starting up a new company to focus on.

I think he's done good running amazon. I've never understood the hate he gets. His company is definitely overvalued, but still solid. I could list hundreds companies run worse and more unethically than amazon.

Curious how the stock market will react to it over the next day or two.

The suddenness does imply there was some sort of reason it appeared sudden.  There are numerous reasons why that might be having to do with many things from boardroom takeover to stock price concerns.  Jobs’ original departure at Apple was also not very telegraphed. 

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

To be clear, Jeff Bezos hasn't quit Amazon.

 

He moved from CEO to Executive Chairman. He essentially sidegraded his position within the company, to go from a day-to-day operations lead, to an oversight position for the new CEO.
