LG CX OLED auto dim help

e22big

My friend just buy LG CX48 OLED not too long ago and he doesn't like it one bit. One issue with this OLED that I discovered later on is that it has a basically terrible brightness in SDR mode (250 nid and less) and just decent in HDR, which make it horrible as a PC gaming monitor but worst part is the TV keep dimming itself no matter what setting which make the image quality suffered even more.

I am trying to find a way to improve his experince, brightness can be fixed somewhat by just using a TV mode, but auto dimming is a massive pain and I can't find anyway to fix it until now, do you have any good advice I could try?

that what happens when big channels like LTT covers  a niche product and ignore its problems

when I commented on their video about this they ignored it

I was excited to buy this TV but the ABL issue (its what you're talking about) is what made change my mind and wait for an oled or newer tech monitor

can your friend return the TV ?

Is he in a rather bright room? He can try turning up "OLED Light" and "Peak Brightness" settings if he hasn't done so already.

That's the ABL (Auto Brightness Limiter) feature (changing the Peak Brightness setting will change its behaviour as well). Technically it can be disabled through a service menu, but it's there for a reason. Not sure how bad it is on a CX, but on my C9 it's hardly ever noticable.

I initially had a similar problem with the B9 when I got it. There is a menu setting that disables it but I can't remember what it was called. It might have been the eco mode thing.

yeah, and to be fair, even without ABL, SDR brigtness in this monitor is barely usable - and as a monitor and not TV, SDR is absolutely important as you can't just use HDR in Windows all the time

to be fair, I did see that it was quite bad in rting but didn't really see that it is 250 nit bad

I haven't go to see it at his place either but he said it's bad - like the monitor just dim to the minimum whenever he used flashy attack pattern in Monster Hunter

Just had a quick look through the menu on mine, it might be Energy Saver. Instead of Auto it is on Medium. I don't notice brightness changes in actual use, but if left idle with a static image for some time it dims slightly and returns once there is activity.

If brightness is an issue, ensure u dont have BFI enabled. you'll loose some moving picture clarity, but gain normal brightness back.

250nits 'should' be enough, unless ur in a bright room, in which case OLED probably wasnt the best choice.

OLED is still developing in the brightness department, upcoming OLEDs should have a 20% boost for basic models, a new upcoming Sony top end model has been measured at 1300nits.

Disabled ASBL* in the service menu. You'll need a IR blaster equipped device to use the Service App or a Service remote (u can buy from amazon/ebay)

ASBL is what will be kicking in when using the Display for browsing and text documents.

ABL** can NOT be disabled but you can reduce its effectiveness by running with OLED light at ~60%, however since ur complaining about brightness this probably isnt an option.

I'm sorry to perhaps resurrect an old thread, but is there a way to have ABL e.g. kick in after say 3-5 seconds of all white image instead of instantly?

I'm playing Soul Calibur 6 and whenever there's a KO, the screen briefly flashes (as it's supposed to), but it turns gray whenever it happens.

not sure if you could do that, as it turn out, ABL adjustment on CX OLED wasn't obvious at all, even trying to leave it off wasn't that easy - guess you will have to experiment and see if any works

Happy owner of an LG OLED B8 converted to C9 over here. Using it as my main gaming pc monitor.

Here's what you need to do to prevent the screen auto dimming.

First, deactivate HDR in Windows when not playing an HDR game.

Second, set your OLED Light level at 29 or under. (you can test higher but over a certain level your screen will dim even tho you made those changes. )

Third, if you have a smartphone with an IR blaster install AnyMote Smart Remote if not then search for this on Amazon MKJ39170828.

Finally, press the "In-Start" button on the remote and enter the password (0413), then go into the OLED submenu and turn "TPC Enable" to off and "GSR Enable" to off. Press the "In-Start" button to close the service menu.

Hope it helps.

came across this and wanted to share the fix i found. I have the LG 48GQ900-B and couldn't find a simple setting for turning off the auto-dimming whenever there were still images/screens (I'm a software engineer and I didn't purchase this for gaming) when web browsing or reading any documentation. It was quite frustrating. I ended up messing around with the settings and I found if i kept the brightness at 100 but turned the contract to anything above 60, that's when the auto-dimming occur. My settings are brightness at 100 and contrast at 60 and I no longer have auto-dimming. By auto-dimming, I mean immediate dimming moving from one window to another. Not like an idle screen or after long use.

Hope this helps someone! It's a lovely monitor.

The auto DIM - ABL cannot disable without go to service mode. Once you go to service mode disable, if not wrong they will be mark there and warranty is void.

That the reason until now I don't buy OLED TV from LG use as monitor.

Another issue is constant brightness issue where brightness heavy change when maximum / normal view of the windows explorer or any white bright apps, the new coming Asus PG42UQ can make it constant as they is option but from review, the SDR brightness will became 200 nits only. 😅 After I seen that review, not so interesting as well.

200 nits SDR full screen is pretty good though, even on LCD, I typically set my screen to 200 nits (mostly to save energy) and it's a bit dim but not bad at all

Ya, should be OK but I think if can reach at least 250 nits is better.

I set 80 % for one of my monitor which is 250 nits, in this case which is exact 200 nits, but in case need extra brightness then it is reaching the limit. 😅
