Looking to buy new lighter laptop; I need some recommendations on options from a non-Chinese company

I am helping my buddy find a new laptop for his wife. She is using some older Apple laptop and was looking for something similar. She already has a beefier laptop for her engineering work but is looking for something something lighter, emphasis on the lap part. Criteria:

  • Smaller and lighter a plus since she is a 90 pound Vietnamese woman
  • A price range wasn't given to me but I would imagine a budget of $1,000
  • Nothing needed high end graphics wise since this is just causally web surfing and shopping
  • Options from a non-Chinese company because she would prefer to not support the genocide of the Uighur population

You can hate on that last bullet point but if I don't have to directly support it then I don't feel as complicit. I realize that to a certain extent, the supply chain of parts makes it unavoidable but still.

Just buy the new M1 air? great battery life and outperforms nearly all other laptops in single thread so should be like lightning for what she's doing.

Given the fact that she needs a light laptop for web-browsing and online shopping (thus not using many applications and resources), the MacBook Air M1 base model will satisfy her in every way. Not to mention that it will be a tremendous performance and efficiency upgrade. And it's probably the most non-Chinese thing that you can buy.

The plan was to not get something Chinese based, this includes Apple too since their supply chain has been tied to forced labor camps. Ya'll not keep up with the news?

Thanks for the suggestions, I will dig into these options and see what I can stir up.

Unfortunately, I agree that most everything is Chinese made to one extent or another but if I can avoid companies directly like Apple or Xiaomi I will try, at least for my friend's sake.
