3080 power requirments

Hi, I know that the 3080 needs 2 8 pin connectors to work but would it still work if one of the 8 pins were from a 6 to 8pin converter? Im not fully sure if that would be sufficient for dealing with any power spikes?

 

Edit: Im a moron for not mentioning but its a 750 watt gold rated psu and my cpu is only a 3600

i dont think it will be problem if you dont plan on overclocking at all but there's a possible chance here....

Well, there's no G1, so it's probably a G2.

Just wanted to make sure it wasn't one that would set on fire.

Why do you not have 2 8-pin connectors?

...I mean, if you have managed to check that PCIe power connectors you've got, then surely you could check what exact PSU it is that you're using?..

If it's the one I linked above, then according to the spec sheet, it should have four PCIe 8-pin (6+2) connectors.

 

That being said, it's also based on an 8+ year old, group regulated platform, so I wouldn't use it with a 3080.

Well, perhaps you could try it out, most likely notice that it doesn't work and hope that the PSU's protections will kick in to shut down safely, or just buy a new, good power supply, since I can't imagine that that'd be much of a problem if you can afford a 3080.

It says that PSU has 4x 6+2 PCIe connectors. What's the issue?

Hey,
not sure if it is already answered for your case, since the supply really seems to have enough connectors....

The point I want to mention: A 3080 can have some significant power spikes. 
My Card had a maximum Spike of almost 450W at my tests. This was for less than a seconds, sure,

but ... 750W can be close depends on the cart and other system components 🙂
(Maybe not thermal wise but peak overcurrent protection wise)

 

To make sure; I am quite sure it will work for 99% of the cases quite fine. But on benchmark loads the power consumption really seem to need 2x8 pin. 
(Mine even has 3x 8 pin to make sure nobody uses a split cable for 1x 8 pin split to 2x 8 pin plugs 😅)

If you somehow can avoid having less than 2 separate 8 pin cables, you probably should.

Assuming you don't go for a very high powered card, but one with only two 8pins it will work just fine. The difference between a 6pin and an 8 pin is that the latter has two grounds extra, which are there for stability.
