PC restart at certain points in games, works fine in stress tests

Potato Pete

Full power down followed by turning itself back on, tends to happen during cutscenes in games and infrequently when sitting at bonfires in dark souls prepare to die edition. Other noteworthy examples are garrys mod whenever a high amount of particles are onscreen, and l4d2 when a boomer explodes in close range. being on top of a "smoke grenade" in any game almost always cause a shutdown. Have run furmark, prime95, OCCT psu test, OCCT vram test, OCCT ram test, unigen heaven, and powermax with no shutdown issues. Reinstalled drivers (card is amd, rx 480) with DDU, didn't help. Really at a loss for what is wrong here.

What are your temps while gaming?  CPU and GPU

Just some odd things to try:

Physically take GPU out and put it back in ensuring proper install.  Computer could have gotten bumped.

GPU sagging?  Prop it up to ensure power delivery pins from PCIe slot are properly contacted

Have MSI Afterburner installed?  Uninstall it.

Revert back to drivers you were using prior to the issue arising

Let me know if you try any of those and whether they were successful or not.  Having it not close on Benchmark makes me think its NOT the first 2 - but it could be a software issue.

Thank you for all the suggestions

Uninstalled afterburner+rivatuner and disabled any overlays I could think of while I was at it (discord). Sadly still restarts. For reverting the drivers, would I want to use the disc my pc came with? It's a prebuilt but I've replaced the ram and psu.

When you updated drivers the last time do you remember the last revision your card was on before having issues?

How about temps while gaming?  Since you no longer have overlays did you monitor CPU and GPU temps?

I don't remember that, sorry.

Playing dark souls because it lets me consistently test restarts. controlling GPU fan speed with open hardware monitor after uninstalling afterburner, running at 100%/3259RPM. GPU at 38 degrees celsius. Cant seem to check CPU fan speed, CPU is at 46 degrees celsius

Can you run memtest?  (free)
