If you're looking at both, I'd grab the HX because there's nicer distance between peripheral connectors (and it has 16 SATA instead of 12).

 

It also has a FDB fan crompared to rifle bearing on the RMx.

any difference other than efficiency and switchable rail?

But they are different platforms.

 

The HX has better voltage regulation than the RMX, how much better is debatable.

 

The HX is a higher end PSU overall than the RMX.

Alright, I could get both at almost the same price so I wonder if there's any gotchas that I don't know of about the HX

 

Should I run single or multi rail? If "it depends" then what does that depend on?

I don't know a lot about multi rail PSUs, but it would probably depend on what you're running on them.

 

I hear that multirail is better for protection reasons but that's as far as I've poked into that topic.

Just run the multi rail, it comes default with it switched on and it will be fine no matter what you would be doing really.

 

At 40A per rail it will handle anything you can throw at it.

Was wondering if the transient spikes of 30 series are known to trip ocp if it's at 40A but that's 480W per rail so I doubt it

 

Each pcie out (on the PSU) is it's own rail right?

If you somehow plug two 3080s in to a single PCIe cable then you've got bigger problems, and should probably be thankful that the 40A current limit is in place.

 

As Ankerson said just leave it in multi rail mode and you won't have any issues.

They work fine, tested mine with both the HX and HXi 850's.

Truthfully I'll be using 3*3060ti on this, and a 3090

 

But all undervolted, 3*120W and 1*300W or so

 

So far 3*120W + 120W (2070S) and 3900x (80W, undervolted as well) have been running fine on my rm850x, but it can sometimes trip OCP, even though I'm only pulling 700W from the wall, so theoretically only ~640W for internal components

 

I lowered some CPU power (110 to 80W) and it's fine for now

If you are going to under volt then the 1000W might be fine, if not then go with a HX 1200W at least.

One last question (for now)

In multi rail mode, is the single rail OCP still present? I assume it is, so if it trips in single rail, switching to multi rail wouldn't help

 

But the reverse will help, tripping in multi rail might be able to be solved by switching to single rail(?) Though I would think you probably have to find out why it's tripping multi rail in the first place

Well, no, in Muli Rail mode single rail is disabled.

 

But yes, if it is tripping in multi rail then switching to single rail might help.

There is OPP, which trips if the total power output is too high. "Single rail" is just a nicer word for disabling multi rail OCP (or omitting multi rail OCP). Single rail PSUs tend to just not have OCP on the 12V rail, and just let OPP do its thing.

You'll probably want more than 1000w PSU for four graphics cards, especially with a 3090 in the mix.

With $3000 worth of graphics cards I'd be looking at an AX1600i. Or at least the HX1200.
