can a headphone mic combo jack work alone like only plugging in a mic

that's likely. You'd still need to buy an adapter if you have one of those combo jacks and you just want to use the mic. They're not that expensive, they can be had for less than $5 on amazon.

It's detecting it as a mono headphone. You need an adapter to get it to work.

it should pick up both regardless, but if you need it to only pick up one or the other then your going to need an audio splitter
