Does the 1080 Ti still make sense in 2021?

redcan0

Hey everyone, I am planning to build a pc using I5 10600KF + Z490-A Pro + Used Evga SC2 Hybrid 1080 Ti. Will this be considered too outdated for 2021? What could be some better combinations? Thanks.

yep. The 1080ti has "raytracing" which is a crappy software implantation.

I could use some help with this!

please, pm me if you would like to contribute to my gpu bios database (includes overclocking bios, stock bios, and upgrades to gpus via modding)

Will the performance of it decrease with the upcoming years for some reason? Could be optimization etc..

Or will it stay in line with the 2070 Super forever?

Cards usually dont degrade in performance unless there's a serious issue with drivers, upon which you just roll the card back to a previous version.

The 1080ti should remain roughly the same as a 5700XT and 2070 super in games, with some titles it losing to simply being due to an older architecture and not being optimized as much. It's still a good card (and I plan on keeping my card even after it dies or becomes silly to actually play games on)

And do you think the Evga Hybrid is worth it? It has closed loop liquid cooling with a radiator. Sits around 50 degrees in heavy games. Would more overclock cokme out of it?

The Hybrid I'd only be convened about due to the age of the loop. The card itself should be totally fine, and hybrids are historically the strongest performers for overclocking. Five years for an AIO isnt unheard of for "still going strong", but just keep an eye on temps as even through the rubber tubing, the liquid evaporates over time through it.

Thank you so much for the detailed response. One last question is should I go with a B450 Tomahawk Max + 5600X or Z490-A Pro and 10600KF? Both have the same price. The only downside I see to the Tomahawk Max is it doesn’t have a 5v ARGB Header which is a problem. But again, if the 5600X is significantly better I could go for it. I know I could get a B550 but then it becomes expensive. What would you suggest?

ARGB shouldn't be a "killer" for a better performing system. Dont sacrifice performance in the name of aesthetics, that's my personal golden rule when I'm making decisions.

Besides, you can get external ARGB controllers for stuff like that.

Is it impossible for a B450 Tomahawk Max to come with Ryzen 5000 ready bios? I wonder how I could update that if I get a 5600X without owning a zen 2 cpu for updating purposes.

Some retailers will flash the BIOS for you to confirm compatibility, but this has been hit or miss in the past. In stroe places like a Microcenter can flash it for you with a store CPU, but otherwise I'm not aware of any way to flash BIOS without having a Ryzen 3000 series CPU first. AMD used to send out an old chip back when people were flashing Ryzen 2000 to B350 boards, but I dont believe that is being offered anymore.

Personally I wouldn’t be spending money on a used card that is 3-4 years old, especially one that is already two generations old. But considering the state of the GPU market right now, it may be all that is available.
If you can wait a few months and if supply increases then there should be a lot more used cards coming onto the market so you may be able to pick up a better deal. Of course it’s up to you though.

1080Ti will still destroy pretty much anything at 1080 without RT and give reasonable performance at 1440p (maybe some medium settings). Really depends what you're expectations are but given you would really need to go 3070 or better to improve noticeably and those are like gold dust unicorns right now...

A 5700XT beats a 1080Ti in most games doesn’t it? And the card itself would be younger and perhaps less likely to die on you. That would be my main concern about buying a 3-4 year old card.

The 1080 Ti absolutely crushes the 5700XT

I will probably get one its cheap and gives really good performance for its price

Watching that video, I wouldn’t say that it absolutely crushes the 5700XT. It’s pretty close and I would personally rather have a newer gen card than an older one.

For 1080p definitely. For 1440p its adequate but might lag in a few games  on ultra settings. For 4k no.

Mine make lots of sense. I have 3 in use now. They are EVGA SC2s running at stock.

I will show you how they do.

Keep in mind that these games are on the highest presets except for the RDR 2 HUB settings.

They are fine at 1440p on modern games and at 4k with older games like GTA 5.

Still "limping along" on a 1060 3GB here... so, you're fine. Can always upgrade when all the madness is over if you really want.
