4x NVMes and GPU running only at 8x 3rd Gen (X299 Dark))

Hi,

 

I am running 4x NVMes but no matter how I set up the NVMes my GPU runs at 8x speed. CPU I have has 40 PCI-E lanes and the motherboard should support it also.

 

Any idea what I am doing wrong?

Can't find any block diagrams of the PCIe layout for that board. You might have to contact EVGA for that info. Just because the CPU has enough lanes, that doesn't mean you can use them any way you please. Different manufactures have them laid our different ways.

WHat slot is your gpu in now?

 

Are you using pcie to m.2 adapters?

if you just the use top slot for your gpu it should be at x16 assuming your not using the second x16 slot.

 

THen put your m.2 in any of the other slots.

 

But x8 won't affect gpu perofrmance in a noticable way, so I wouldn't worry about it.

I took out all PCI-E NVMe adapters and still running at 8x.

 

And yes it will it's 3090 in PCI-E 3.0 8x.

Tried updating BIOS still no luck.

Are you using a riser cable for the GPU?

There still won't be a noticable difference in performance.

There will be it's PCI-E 4.0 GPU.

Oo nice to have someone with same setup.

 

I didn't. However, every time I turn on the PC I hear 4 beeps then standard beep codes and it boots. Also can you show me your LEDs above Motherboard 24 pin? 1 is red for me.

I can once I get home.

I do know that I have no red LEDs though.

Should be in about 3 hours.

Look at the tech power up reviews, its less than 5%

 

Do you have anouther gpu or board to test it in?

 

Have you tried all the slots?

 

Could be a bad gpu or board.

Nope this GPU is 500W.

Does removing the NVMe drives restore 16x connectivity? probably good to rule out whether the NVMe drives are related to the problem or not.

Nope. Stays 8x even if I switch the slot too.

Please read pages 27 and 30 in your manual:

 

PCIe-Slot 1 (PE1) has 16 PCIe 3.0 lanes from CPU but shares 8 lanes with PCIe-Slot 2.

PCIe-Slot 2 (PE2) has 8 PCIe 3.0 lanes from CPU and shares another 8 with PCIe-Slot 1.

PE3 is non-functional on 16 lane CPUs

PE4 is non-functional on 16 lane CPUs

PE5 has 4 PCIe 3.0 lanes from PCH (chipset)

PE6 has 4 PCIe 3.0 lanes from PCH (though physical 16x) and activating it will disable PM2.

 

Kaby Lake-X:

M.2 Key-M (PM1) has 4 PCIe 3.0 lanes from CPU BUT PE1 cannot be populates and enabling PM1 will disable one U.2 slot (PU1).

M.2 Key-M (PM2) has 4 PCIe 3.0 lanes from PCH and enabling this will disable PE6.

M.2 Key-E (PE) has 1 PCIe 3.0 lane from PCH.

 

U.2 (PU1) has 4 PCIe 3.0 lanes from CPU but shares with PM1 - again PE1 cannot be populated for this to work.

U.2 (PU2) is unsupported on Kaby Lake X and disabled on 16 or 28 lane CPUs.

 

Question is now: what CPU do you have with how many lanes? Skylake-X will probably run, Kaby Lake-X will probably not in this config.

10980XE and it's not running even with 40 lanes.

I assume the BIOS has been updated? Are there any information from EVGA in how the lanes are being split up with Cascade Lake-X? Because there are no infos in the manual on that chip.

 

Might be a bug as well.

 

Have you tried disabling PM1 and PU1 (actually disabling them in BIOS and removing all drives)? 

 

The fact, that you get 8x on PE1 and PE2 (to me) indicated the board is using the shared lanes (potentially). Might be a bug, might be a technical reason.

I'll be taking out everything from that board today including all the NVMes to be sure.

 

I updated the BIOS and no luck.

 

My 2080 Tis were 16x each and I can't even get 16x with a single one here but I had 2080 Ti SLI 6 months ago since then motherboard sat unused
