4x8gb or 2x16gb

am building  a 3080 build and i want to add 32gb, so my question is which config is better 4x 8gb sticks or 2x16gb sticks due to the 2x16 sticks being  too expensive on my place i would be able to go for the 2x8 kit with more ease , the ram ill be using is the corsair vengeance rgb pro 3200mhz cl16(for the 2x8 kit, the 2x16 is 3000mhz cl16) and my motherboard is the  ASRock ATX B550 Steel Legend and my cpu is the ryzen 5600x no intents for oc i just want 32gb with the xmp.

Go for the 4x8 version. The faster memory will help out more. The only reason to go for 2x16 is if you want to go for more RAM later on, but 32GB should be enough for the next 3-4 years at least.

2*8 at 3200cl16 should be faster, even more so if the 16gb DIMMs are single rank

But you'll be limited to 32gb until you decide to change them out, which should be enough for games for quite some time to come

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

I went 4x8GB because it's going to be a long time till something comes around and stresses out 32GB, and Ryzen seems to perform better with a 4x8 config. Only three games I've seen exceed 16GB are Far Cry 5, FS2020, and DCS

Ryzen is faster with more memory RANKS, not sticks. Many 16GB sticks are dual rank anyway, so there would be no difference between two dual rank 16gb sticks, and four single rank 8gb sticks.
Less STICKS however puts less strain on the IMC, possibly meaning better overclocking and the ability to run tighter timings.

On the other hand 4x8 is potentially cheaper, or lets you buy faster memory for the same money as 2x16.

Its a toss up really. I'd probably lean towards 2x16 unless the budget was tight.

Can confirm this. I have 2x16, this kit specifically: https://www.newegg.com/ballistix-32gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820164174?Item=N82E16820164174

I have been able to tighten the timings up on them as well.
