144hz monitor running games at 120hz

Downkey

Hello! So about a month ago I got my HP Pavilon Gaming Laptop as a replacement for my again GTX 1050 PC. The problem with the laptop is that it only has an HDMI port, so when the monitor is plugged in, it defaults to 120. But, about 3 weeks ago I tried overclocking the monitor, and I was able to get a stable 144hz, and that’s what it runs on the desktop, 144hz. But when I launch a game, it always goes to 120hz. I’ve tried a couple things. In NVIDIA CTRL Panel I’ve set refresh rate too highest available, and a couple other things.

One thing is that when I set VSYNC on in NVIDIA control panel, it defaults to 141, but the input lag is bad because of vsync being on, so I switch back too 120.

is there any other way for me to have 144hz enabled in games? (I mostly play Valorant, it defaults too 120hz)

Thanks!

You will not notice a difference between 120 and 144 hz. It is not worth the hassle getting it working.

I will recommend an NHu12s (or an NHd15 (maybe)) for your PC build. Quote or @ me @Prodigy_Smit for me to see your replies.

No I notice a difference, it’s a lot less smooth. I play a lot of competitive games so I think it’s worth it

A GTX1050 is holding you back more than the refresh rate, though.

But if your laptop only has one HDMI port, there's no real way to get 144Hz out of it.

Does the USB-C port support displayport by any chance?

Prob should’ve worded it better. I upgraded from a GTX 1050 desktop to a 1650 laptop. It was $350 so I just bought it

you're saying that in display settings of the games you play you don't see 144Hz as one of the options?

Oh my... did you try asking on forums of the game?

Also I guess you could try changing the game user settings file if this game has one....
