Video editing software for a school project

Hello all, 

I've to make a quick 3 minute animated video for a school project. I'm not that skilled video editing and don't have access to any pro level programmes. I already looked at DaVinci Resolve and it's not going to run on my laptop. I think my best bet is to go with some open source piece of software. 

 

Also, I'm thinking about making my video something similar to this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJyWVJs0kIY). I'd really appreciate, if you could give me some advice about how I go about making something like that too.

You are going to have a really hard time making a video look like that with free open source software. It looks like it's probably all made in After Effects. What are your laptop specs? I've gotten davanci to edit 4K video on some pretty low end XPS 13s. Otherwise you could use GIMP to create the overlays and use powerpoint to animate it to make it flow

Lets start by saying that you are not gonna be able to do something like the example if your laptop would have issues with rendering/scrubbing. That video example has transitions and transformations on multiple clips and tracks at the same time. More tracks = harder on hardware to scrub.

 

Quick and dirty solution would be to make presentation on PowerPoint or other software like that, then record it using screen recorder.

 

As for software, besides Resolve, Shotcut, Hitfilm Express, Windows Movie Maker, Microsoft Photos app are the options.

My laptop has a i5 7200U and AMD R5 m330, which is utterly useless. I think as you and others said the best option for me is to use powerpoint.

I use DaVinci resolve (the free version) and I would reccomend it. But if it doesn't work well, please don't waste your time with trouble shooting.
