Your thoughts on mobo brands like Biostar and ECS

I know plenty of people dis brands like biostar and ecs, but do they really deserve it. Personally i use gigabyte, but alot of the pcs i've come across have been ones with biostar  motherboards and they don't seen to spontaneously explode as i've been led to believe.

So your thoughts please, love, hate and why?

Personally I have a build for a friend with a biostar mobo, its $35 lol, but he only needs to game on it, no OC or anything complicated.

I used biostar motherboards for a while and never had an issue.  Don't know where the hate comes from.

I personaly have never used a ecs or biostar mother board. I have not actually been hearing anything bad about them to be honest. I think they my just be one of those often overlooked yet decent companies.

I avoid them like the plague. I never heard anything bad really, but I don't know how reliable they are, and they just look straight nasty.

Exactly where does all the hate and bias come from....

I think i will make a cheapo rig with a biostar just to try it out for myself.....maybe just use it for data recovery and emulation

They aren't terrible at all. It's just that their features and design generally don't cater as well those of other brands often at better price points.

Like really, this is pretty ugly http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813135352

They also just aren't as popular as brands for the majority of gamers like Asus or Msi who branches out into all types of gaming related stuff, Asus' "little bro" Asrock, etc.

I think I'm noticing a clear trend - both these boards are all similar quality as more popular mobos, but are just ugly as all hell.

Probably why they're avoided.

I always hear hate coming from a lot of people towards Biostar, but I've never had a problem. Great choice if you're on a budget and can't afford something like an ASUS or MSi :)

Well they seem to cater to OEMs / Frefabs more then "us", but for basic requirements I doubt there's a problem.

Never used either though availability is poor and expensive in the UK so it doesn't really make sense.

Not used one of the no namers for years and years, i don't think they are as bad as they used to be and maybe coming back, foxcon i remember doing a build in like the 1990's with one. and a biostar.

a little bland in the design i would say, but if you want just experience building a cheap computer for basic stuff there fine.

i think they cater more for the industrial / office applications than the gamer. i mean why would a business if needing to get 100 computers spend more than they had to, most people don't know or care whats inside or how things work, unless your like us and obsessed with computers / design and assetics :P

The last 5 or so builds i have done have been Asus as i trust in paying more for quality, its like buying a BMW car, you know there designed and build proper.

saying that i wouldn't rule out looking at a less popular brand for the next build.

got to love Asus components

Biostar is a great low end motherboard and can be found almost every where. ECS motherboards on the other hand are a bit sketchy.

Allot of people tell you to stay away from Biostar, I actually forgot about ECS. I don't know why people say hate Biostar. Sometime you get a lemon. But it's that way with any brand. I have a TZ77A Biostar board. And it (knock on Wood) Is the most stable and smoothest running board I have ever used. And it has crossfire and all the bells and whistles and it only cost me $63.99, So if it was not for people hating on Biostar, I would have not got it for such a good price. LOL

I have a Biostar MB in my Phenom II X6 media server. It's this model - http://www.biostar-usa.com/app/en-us/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=523#spec

It's running 24/7 and I haven't had an issue in the 3yrs. When I first bought it,  I used it in my gaming PC with a Phenom 960T @ 4Ghz with an OC'd NB. It's only a 3+1 Phase design with no passive or active cooling on the motherboard vrm. I never had an issue though running the CPU @ 1.4v. I bought the board for around $60 and to this day I have never had a regret. Still runs great. I will buy biostar again without hesitation.

I cant say very much for ECS, as I have never used their motherboards.I know they have made some pretty sexy motherboards back in the day, they were the first ones to do black and gold and they did it very well.

Biostar and ECS are actually quite good

I know biostar were the first manufacturer to have GPU overclocking!!!

and ECS ran something called "durathon" because they test beyond industry standards

they just really high quality low cost products. Just dont expect the ferrari of boards out of them. For most normal builds they do a perfectly reasonable job.

I don't know. I think that when you're spending hundreds of dollars on a PC, you don't really want to cheap out on something as important on a motherboard. Not saying that they're inferior or anything, they're just unknown to most people.

Like, I know for sure Gigabyte or ASUS or even Asrock will give me a solid product 99% of the time or my money back :P

Why the hate?

No hate, just think they are on the lower end of the motherboard chain when comparing to other manufacturers. Kind of like how, Foxcoon made really good boards back in the day, then around 2006-2007 they started failing at high end boards, then went down to generic baords and have stayed there ever since. I have been in the game since 1998, when you compare Biostar and their products from back then to today, they qulity of their prducts have gone down big time.
