sticky gel pad on RAM

Hi there, 

 

I recently bought a new laptop Asus swift, and found this sticky gel pad on the RAM. (images attached)

 

I'm a total noob when it comes to hardware, i was just curious to learn what this is exactly?

 

Is it to cool/ protect the RAM?
