Or you can get the facts about the new phones without Samsung's BS by watching MKBHD's videos, which went live at the same time as Samsung's stream:

CPU: i7 4790k, RAM: 16GB DDR3, GPU: GTX 1060 6GB

As is often the case, Samsung set its embargo for the start of the event... so there's not much reason to watch the event.

What is it with samsung and downgrading some of the specs of their cheaper phones. They did it with the Note20 vs the Note10, now the S21 too? Can't wait for the Note21 with a 720p screen and paper body.

What was that about the folded lens? Stupid stream doesn't let scroll back.

It's basically the familiar periscope-style lens for the 10X zoom on the S21 Ultra.

Mind you, the S20 wouldn't do 120Hz unless you dropped to 1080p anyway, so I don't know that this is a significant setback in practice.

Yeah, but they also removed the curve (which might be positive though, depending on who you ask) and the S21's back is plastic as opposed to glass on the S20. It's not a huge deal just rather disappointing, especially since there is no premium version of the regular S21.

A flat screen is positive in my book. Plastic isn't so hot, but it's also $200 less.

If there's a beef, it's that Apple's iPhone 12 has a higher-res (if 60Hz) screen and a glass back at the same price.

A flat screen is usually better in my opinion as its less prone to breaking, plastic is fine though, a glass back really isnt needed especially if you put a sticker skin or case on the phone.

But no mention of no charger in the box with the S21? Thats more of a downside than a plastic back IMO on a $800 phone.

Plastic's scratch resistance is much worse than glass though, which is kind of annoying. Plastic would be fine on a $500 phone, but at $800 there's no excuse really.

To no one's surprise at this point, the S21 apparently doesn't come with a charger in the box.

SoC: Apple M1 Max (8+2 core CPU w/ 32-core GPU) | RAM: 32GB unified LPDDR5 | Storage: 1TB PCIe Gen4 SSD | OS: macOS Monterey

The Communicator (Apple iPhone 13 Pro)

SoC: Apple A15 Bionic | RAM: 6GB LPDDR4X | Storage: 128GB internal w/ NVMe controller | Display: 6.1" 2532x1170 "Super Retina XDR" OLED with VRR at up to 120Hz | OS: iOS 15.1

It sucks, but it's also amusing how companies sometimes won't even hide that they're just waiting for Apple to tell them what to do (for better or worse).

I noticed that Samsung even duped Apple's portrait lighting mode in its updated camera app!

Yep, I am going to be sticking with my Galaxy S20 FE, which I got for $470 cash on a promotion. Second best purchase I have ever made, besides my 3080 TUF, that one is TUF to beat...

CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D

Another phone that is mostly shown from the back, because from the front, it's just too boring.

It's gonna be really hard to top the Galaxy S20 FE. There's no question the S21 is more powerful, but a few hundred dollars more powerful? Not necessarily. It's a nice problem for Samsung to have, mind you.

I don't get why people are so upset about the lack of a charging brick in the box.

You can get one for like 10 dollars on Amazon, which supports USB PD.

I think the amount of butthurt over the charger is so disproportional to the impact it actually has. New phone is 200 dollars cheaper? "But the 10 dollar charger isn't included!".

I don't think the plastic back matters either. I'd rate glass as one of the worst materials you can make a phone out of. It might feel nice and "premium", but it's shit for everything else.

I think people are mad about absolutely trivial shit that doesn't matter and are ignoring the bigger issues. Issues like:

1) Lower resolution screen, by a lot. Assuming this is still pentile, it's so low resolution that it doesn't even pass the "retina" threshold anymore. At least not for blue and red.

2) No microSD card slot.

3) Seems like they didn't upgrade the cameras on the regular model.

4) No WiFi 6E on the regular model.

5) No ultra wideband support on the base model (as in, the non-Plus and non-Ultra model)

I think the SoC will be great, but everything else about the S21 is "meh" at best from what I've seen so far. The Ultra looks fantastic and I would love to have it, but the gap between the regular and Ultra model is massive, and sadly the price is too.

It's nice that they have lowered the price to "only" 800 dollars for the base model, and considering the Pixel 5, which is a shit phone in comparison, is only 100 dollars cheaper I think it is a good price for the phone. What bothers me the most is how the Ultra is now the flagship at 1200 dollars, and the regular S models are now severely cut down versions.

I can't wrap my head around $799 phone having PLASTIC freaking case back. PLASTIC. And spare me the "but plastic can be good sometimes". Yeah, it can be good on a Realme 7 Pro for 300€. I have no objections there. But on a $799 device, no, never. Just no. It just reeks of cost savings to squeeze out massive margins and test the grounds how far they can push it and still get away with it. Devices costing this much and having no charger AND plastic back is just unforgivable and should be boycotted. I hope no one will buy this trash. But we all know Samsung will sell fuck ton of these...

Samsung doesn’t even trust their own devices lol 😆

Well, you know...you're paying $800 and that's a lot of money for a phone, you should expect a $10 charging brick in the box. The previous s10 came with a charging brick, adapter, case and earphones with extra tips.

I use a case with my phone but yeah at $800 I agree, Samsung could use something more scratch resistant than the plastic they're using in their cheaper phones.

Yeah lol, its just disappointing the Android phone companies like Samsung brag about the features they have then go and take it away and then tell you the phone is cheaper, but its not once you buy a decent charger and earphones.

I never understand paying >£300-400 for a phone. I have a pocafone f1 which was £300 and has a Snapdragon 845 (which was the fastest chip at the time), 6GB of Ram and 128GB storage. It shows that anything more than that is just profiteering in my book,

Holepunch display yet again?

When will this meme end?

Where is the popup camera which is a far superior option and isn't annoying to look at?

Who cares about IP ratings? Nobody gave a damn for years, almost nobody ruined their phone with water damage, instead phones would get rekt by dropping it on the floor instead.

Pulling this stat out of my ass, but I bet my whole living that 99% of phone failures for the past 20 years were NOT based on water damage.

Without a front facing camera you can actually make the integrity of the whole screen a lot stronger, I refuse to believe that in exception from self loving freaks people actually use the front facing camera that much aside from the occasional selfie or group gathering, I use mine once or twice a year.

Where are graphene batteries? There have been powerbanks featuring this since 2018-2019.

How about making your phones less expensive and batteries easily replaceable? Oh I guess it's a lot easier to just Virtue Signal on social media and to the press how much you care about the environment and people affected by covid or other economic issues, walking the talk actually takes effort.

Personally I'd only look at Ultra in general, the rest in the lineup seem less worth it in their range and price. Better alternatives out there. They didn't include fast charging capabilities, still fairly low vs competition. I like plastic more, or even metal actually over freaking glass. Hate the back glass trend. Lack of microSD is a shame though, especially since Samsung showed off their own fastest ones at some point. I like flat display and Ultra has the lame curved one, which also adds to price. No UD front cam still.

The new SoC will be great no doubt, I'll wait to see what others show still.
