Stock Ryzen 5 3600 that runs hot

So since day one with a bone stock 3600 I had to replace the stock cooler due to thermal throttling. It was hitting over 90c regularly.

Friend told me to try a Hyper 212. And while the clocks did go higher with prime95 it still hits 89c.

So I decided to go to the very top of the stack for air cooling. A Noctua NH-D15.... and with prime95 it sits at 80c. Shouldnt this beast of a cooler be able to handle this thing better? My Room temp is 21c.

Bought a new case for it as well. A Lian Li Lancool II Mesh.

The Hyper 212 is actually a good cooler to cool the stock 3600, I wonder why even a d15 is not able to cool it. Have you tried calling up AMD or the retailer you brought it from? Pretty sure this is not right CPU behaviour

Sometimes it isn't, but the tube of NT-H1 thermal paste that comes with the NH-D15 is pretty good.

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X • Noctua NH-D15 • MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk • 2x8GB G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16 • MSI VENTUS 3X GeForce RTX 3070 OC • Samsung 970 Evo 1TB • Samsung 860 Evo 1TB • Cosair iCUE 465X RGB • Corsair RMx 750W (White)

Peripherals/Other:

ASUS VG27AQ • G PRO K/DA • G502 Hero K/DA • G733 K/DA • G840 K/DA • Oculus Quest 2 • Nintendo Switch (Rev. 2)

Laptop (Dell XPS 13):

Not pre-applied, just comes in a little 3.5G tube on the side.

You can see the CPU is pinned at 88 W PPT. These chips have a soldered IHS. This is not AMD's fault.

OP, how exactly are you applying thermal paste? What motherboard are you using? What is the power deviation as reported by HWiNFO? How are you mounting the cooler?

Main: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti, 16 GB 4400 MHz DDR4 Fedora 38 x86_64

Pea siezed bean. Gets 100% coverage... installed the cpu cooler properly? There's only 1 way to install it. Motherboard as an AORUS B450 Pro Wifi.

Update Chipset driver and setting power plan for amd balance will help a little. Also setting voltage to 1.3 will drop temps father.

This shows the motherboard is messing with the power tracking, but not to a ridiculous degree, and should still be within the D15's capability to keep colder. It's likely sitting ~ 100 W at most. P95 Small FFT's is the worst case for thermals.

Noctua also mentions this: https://noctua.at/en/nh-d15/faq#226

Which does correlate with my experience with Zen 2.

Put the info from my 3600 on prime95 for comparison. I was thinking, did you tighten the heatsink all the way down? Also, I had success in bringing down my temperatures with using the OC mode on ryzen master and setting the voltage to 1.2v and 4.2ghz, which actually brings the temperatures down and gives me higher clocks.

EDIT: Using hyper 212 with a noctua nf-a12x25.
