How long do batteries last

How long do batteries last in stuff like wireless headphones, phones, mp3 players ect. Obviously its capacity gets lower over time but I consider holding at least 20-30 percent of its original capacity "usable" as a backup. and even if you don't use the battery a lot it still degrades right?

My Corsair voids lasted over 4 years, now wired only for about the last year of that. So maybe around 4 years battery life.

My iPhone 7 is down to 60% and lasts about a day with light usage. Had it since early 2017 so its almost 4 years old. 

 

Across all my devices it looks like 4 years is a decent life, beyond that it starts to affect its usage.

From my experience a phone battery will last at least two to three years (depending on use) before you start noticing significantly faster battery drain. I've never owned a pair of headphones long enough to have the battery degrade. Something else usually breaks before that happens, or I just replace them with something better.

so its at 60 percent at 4 years? by that account I estimate it will be usable by 6 years but just barley, depending on usage.

I always have to replace phones because im too rough with the charger port so after 2 years my phones port is so loose I can barley charge it lol.

My plan was always this year but but it is still more than usable for my needs at the moment but the Rona will certainly helped this device last longer, I can see it making 2022 as its more than usable at the moment as it only needs charging at night.

Well, I have a Coby MP3 player from 2013.
I had one before it form 2011 but it broke
Anyway.

2013 player works fine still.
I haven't charged it in a month and it's at full battery.

Though it's REALLY low power.
I have a Samsung S4 Mini and its battery drains in 2 days at idle, 1 day if used.

So I'd say it depends on what device and the quality of the battery.

Well that's a bit of a different problem isn't it? Maybe you should look into a wireless charger. Or one of those cables with a magnetic connector that you leave plugged into your phone's charge port.

Since battery degradation is not dependent on the capacity the rate will be more noticeable in smaller batteries. Older devices can hold a charge for years and years as they contain older nimh which also degrade slower than newer Lion, LiFe, and LiPo batteries. You'll probably have a 250-800mah battery in your portable device so you'll probably get 3-5 years of normal use until the battery life is short enough to justify replacing it

would it still be usable as a backup after 6-8 years, and at least hold 20 percent of original capacity? and could you still use it plugged in after 10 plus years?

Yea I'm gona try to be more carful, i used to only get cheapo phones but i finally got something mid range so maybe I will start being gentle and maybe get one of those magnetic chargers, my new phone doesn't support wireless charging tho.

im surprised, I got some mp3 players too as backups they are dirt cheap and my phone is pretty mush a glorified mp3 player/web browser for me anyway.

yea, but i feel like there will be a dropoff like when you walk into the water on the beach one second your fine and you can stand then more more step there's a super deep and dark abyss.

It highl depends on your ussage patterns. For example in a phone, if you use it heavily, on a daily basis, in 1 to 1.5 years the battery life will be noticeably shorter, if you're using it normally, then 2-3 maybe 4 if you're on the lower end of usage. If you barely use it then potentially 5-6 years may be possible.

I buy these little wireless earbud airpod knockoff things when they are on sale i have 3 pairs and will probably cycle through them when they break, so i may have a new pair sitting for a year or 2 before I really start using it. sometimes the sale is so good I just get them knowing I will break the one Im using now at some point, because I bring them to workplaces and stuff and drop them a lot. I dont spend good money or get high end earbuds anymore, learned that lesson, I only get high quality headphones now.

It really depends on your usage and how you charge it. It will still function after 6-8 years but I would imagine capacity would be near 60%, which is really a noticeable difference on mobile devices. But yes you could still use it plugged in if you really wanted

There's no general answer.

There's various chemistry types - there's lithium batteries "optimized" for high discharge (ex. electronic screwdrivers and drilling tools, vacuum cleaners etc) and there's batteries optimized for continuous discharge at lower current (ex laptop battery packs). 

There's charging at high current ,fast,  which reduces the battery life,  and there's slow charging which gives more charge cycles to the battery, longer life.

There's various charging circuits and charging controllers and charging mechanisms ... for example a charging circuit that stops charging when battery reaches 4.15v instead of 4.20v will keep the battery happier compared to one that charges up to 4.20v and then keeps trickle charging it.

 

In smart phones, batteries are typically rated for 700-1000 charging cycles ...once this threshold is reached, the manufacturer estimates something like 30-40% loss of capacity on the battery... you can go to an electronic components online store and download datasheets and see the specs.

what if you barley used it, would it still degrade over time still, they have a shelf life?
