[Misinformation] Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 "Ultra", faster than RTX 3060 Ti

Note: This news article is incorrect, since Nvidia announced the GeForce RTX 3060 with 12GB of VRAM, on their Game On event. I will contact staff of the LTT forum and ask if this post can be removed.

Spoiler

Please be aware that this is a rumor/leak, always take this information with a grain of salt.

Summary

Wccftech got pictures of the upcoming GeForce RTX 3060 12GB GPU, which is apparently called the RTX 3060 Ultra. As already mentioned, it will come with 12GB of GDDR6 memory, and is faster than the RTX 3060 Ti, at $449. It is based on Samsung's 8nm node.

Quotes

Quote

Today, we have a leak for you surrounding the upcoming NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 graphics card. We have obtained the first pictures of a custom GeForce RTX 3060 graphics card which is designed by ASUS and to our surprise, the 12 GB models will be regarded as the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ultra.
As per our sources, NVIDIA is rebranding the GeForce RTX 3060 as the GeForce RTX 3060 Ultra. It is stated that the Ultra tier is spec'd above the Ti and SUPER variants and as such, this card features a beefier memory interface and top of the line cooling solutions even though the GPU it is based on is a mainstream design.
Coming to the specifications, well the GeForce RTX 3060 Ultra will feature 12 GB of GDDR6 memory which is more than the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, GeForce RTX 3070, and GeForce RTX 3080 cards.
[...]
Once again, it is interesting to see NVIDIA changing the branding behind the scenes. The GeForce RTX 30 Ultra series branding confirms one thing that we are bound to get more variants with this specific naming convention. It is also likely that the higher memory variants or the SUPER variants that were recently reported will also be using the Ultra branding which sounds cooler than the SUPER branding. There's also a chance that NVIDIA could feature three graphics cards within its GeForce RTX 3060 lineup, the Ti, the Ultra, and the standard variant. The Ultra variant is said to feature a pricing of $449 US and is expected to be announced on the 12th of January at NVIDIA's CES 2021 keynote.

My thoughts

Nvidia is obviously scrambling for parts to fight back against AMD's RX 6000 series, which explains why Nvidia the card have more VRAM than the RTX 3080. The new Ultra name just adds more complexity and confusion for the average consumer, who has no idea about what all the names mean. It is exciting to see what Nvidia has in their backpockets to fight back. At the end of the day, competition is always good for the consumer.

Edit: In the quote, it says that "NVIDIA is rebranding the GeForce RTX 3060 as the GeForce RTX 3060 Ultra". This apparentally caused some confusion in the replys. There are rumors that say there will be a RTX 3060 6GB and a RTX 3060 12GB. The GeForce RTX 3060 Ultra will be the rumored RTX 3060 12GB, and the 6GB variant will still be called the RTX 3060 6GB. Sorry if this caused confusion.

Nice, now they can release a "30XX", then the "30XXTi", then the "30XX Super" and finally the "30XX Ultra". I can't wait for the "3090 Super Ultra Ti" that has 5% more performance than a 3090 and 48GB VRAM.

These new NVIDIA names just sound like a children's toy. "Get the new Super Soaker Ultra Ti!"

Or is this Ultra thing a new Asus model like a TUF or Strix card but with actual hardware changes?

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

For real though: Wouldn't it just sound better (and more mature) to name the cards 30XX, 30XXTi, 30XXS and 30XXU if they really have to have all these different skus?

Then they should just adopt car stuff. The base being just 30XX, then the better model the 30XXS and the best one the 30XXRS.

We'll just have to wait until the RTX9000 series is out. Then technically every card is over 9000.

I miss the simpler times when I had a series of base cards, sorted by their performance in ascending order (x50, x60, x70, x80, x90), and where they would release a Ti version some years later that would be sitting above it's base version, but below the next one (x70 < x70 Ti < x80).

Such simpler times. Why the current fuckery.

At this point with PC gaming it's better to pretend you're living in <current year - 2>. So basically, if it's 2021, play games from 2019. They have bug fixes, mod support, all DLCs released, they cost less. You can also run them at 2-year-old hardware that costs normal money, and where you never feel sad because you bought a Ti card only for Nvidia to release the Ultra Duper Ti x2 card the next day

I like cute animal pics.

And yes, according to Wccftech, Ultra will perform better than both the Ti model and the Super model

Its just such a stupid move. 3060 should not have more Vram then a 3070, let alone 50% more. The name is AWFUL. The 3070 should have been a 3060 then, and the 3060 should have been a 3050, shifting parts around would have made this easier. The fact its going to go 8 12 8 10 24 is silly. Vram wont be the limiting factor on this card, the Core will be.

So they are bringing back the Ultra moniker, huh.

Looking forward to never seeing any of these in stock, like literally everything else.

These new NVIDIA names just sound like a children's toy. "Get the new Super Soaker Ultra Ti!"

Or is this Ultra thing a new Asus model like a TUF or Strix card but with actual hardware changes?

But why? I don't get why nvidia needs 20 skus when they can not keep the current skus in stock. I mean its not like they are having problems selling their new cards so what is the need for new skus to attract customers if they are already selling out consistently?

Flooding the market so you have something at every price point. And when you search for GPUs there will be much more NVIDIA results than AMD.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.
