Dell introduces "5K" 4K Ultrawide Monitor

You want a 4K monitor but Ultrawide as well? Dell decided to share a bit of its CES 2021 in advance by announcing its new UltraSharp Monitor.

The new monitor is the first 40inch 4K Ultrawide monitor (which Dell markets as 5K) on the market.

Named the Dell Ultrasharp U4021QW, it features a resolution of 5,120 x 2,160 (140ppi), curved (2500r), it offers 90W charger via USB Type-C and Thunderbolt 3.

Panel type is what you would expect from Ultrasharp series, an IPS. If it would be my guess, probably manufactured by LG.

It also features dual 9-watt speakers. And it covers 98% of the DCI-P3 color gamut and 100% of the Adobe sRGB spectrum.

Noticed something interesting with the ports?

It is also a mini dock with Ethernet

 

It includes:

  • DisplayPort 1.4
  • 2x HDMI 2.0 ports
  • Thunderbolt 3 port (with up to 90 watts of charging as mentioned) / USB-C downstream port for charging
  • 4x USB-A ports (all are 3.2, where 3x Gen 2 and 1 Gen 1 with charging)
  • RJ45 Ethernet jack (No info on speed, probably 1Gpbs)
  • 3.5mm plug for audio.

 

 

Dell says that it will arrive on January 28th, 2021 for $2,100 US

I would buy it if it had wireless charging in the base and high refresh rate

I think you should update it to 5k ultrawide, thats how Dell is marketing it and its resolution it 5k not 4k.

4k would be 3840x1600 while this is 5120 x 2160

No that is not how that works. It is still 2160 like you would find on a traditional 4k monitor but is 5120 because it is ultrawide. If it was 1600 it would not be considered 4k anymore. There are already plenty of ultrawide monitors that have 1600 as its vertical pixel count. By your logic you could basically say a 1080p ultrawide is actually 1440p or a 1440p ultrawide is a 4k monitor but they clearly are not just like this is clearly not a 5k monitor.

Actually, that's exactly how it works. It's not called 4K because it's 2160px tall, it's called 4K because it's about 4000 pixels wide, give or take (but mostly take) a few pixels — and 3840 is kinda 4000 if you squint a little and start rounding.
Tangentially related rant, while we're talking what resolutions should and shouldn't be called: 2560x1440p is not 2k. Period. The appropriate term for that is QHD. But that's off-topic.

Calling it "5K ultrawide" would also be more in line with how 5120x2160 displays are currently advertised, as LG and MSI have both use similar terms ("5K2K" is close enough to "5K ultrawide").

No its not. If you consider that then 3840 by 1080 ultrawide monitors would be considered 4k ultrawide when in reality it is simply a very wide 1080p monitor. Why are 1440p ultrawide monitors called 1440p ultrawide? Because of the vertical pixel count. Same with 1080p ultrawide. well ultrawide is used for the 21:9 aspect ratio not the 32:9.

 

But the industry standards is the "k" ones mean width, and the "p" ones mean height.
4k typically seen as 3840 x nnnn; 2.5k = 2560 x nnnn; 2k = 1920 x nnnn
2160p typically seen as nnnn x 2160; 1440p = nnnn x 1440p; 1080p = nnnn x 1080

but to make things confusing a 1080p Movie shot in 21:9 (like most) is 1920x800

But the industry standards is the "k" ones mean width, and the "p" ones mean height.
4k typically seen as 3840 x nnnn; 2.5k = 2560 x nnnn; 2k = 1920 x nnnn
2160p typically seen as nnnn x 2160; 1440p = nnnn x 1440p; 1080p = nnnn x 1080

but to make things confusing a 1080p Movie shot in 21:9 (like most) is 1920x800

Yeah that makes zero sense. 4k ultrawide makes way more sense for this monitor as it would be simply an ultrawide version of a 4k monitor while if it is called a 5k ultrawide monitor people would fail to realize it is still the same vertical pixel count as a 4k monitor. Maybe it would be simpler if they called it a 2160p ultrawide.
