Sony MDR 7506 Review - Headphones that forgot to be old

81238198_IMG_4896(2).thumb.JPG.2485af78f29698ea7248be18358ccbf7.JPG

Happy new year and here is the review as promise.

What's in the box

  1. Headphones
  2. Bag
  3. 1/4 adapter

Side note the box is really retro but trust me this is brand new.

Build quality

  1. pretty good plastic
  2. cable really nice and long 9.8 ft
  3. Plug is a 3.5mm gold plated and cased in metal 10/10 there
  4. head band is vinyl (very easy to clean)

Build is definitely made for studio and out in the field.

also that exposed wire creeps people out and I don't blame them but the wire gets out of the way.

For 100 USD these are freaking built like a tank.

Comfort

  1. really good clamp though its more than my Sennhiser HD206
  2. pads well they are what stock pads are decent padding
  3. head band is really comfy because most of the support comes from the ear cups clamp

I am used to my sennyies light clamp force but I think they will break in time.

Also these get warm in the ear which makes sense since they are closed backs.

Sound

Oh my these are so good on voice and instruments (guitars, trumpets and piano).

Not much bass though people now I don't really like that much bass these have a good amount to me.

Detail is so good I can see why sound engineers love them.

Also these are great for editing video and good monitors on set.

IDK if I would use them for talent for singing.

These require like no power but sound much better with a tiny bit of more power even my Fiio a-1 amp made these awesome.

Not recommended for gaming due to surround sound not being the best but are good for osu!.

  1. In unison - Kira6
    1. it almost made me cry it was so much detail in the orchestra.

    2. ふたりごと - TRUE
      1. First thanks @Peterwoo802 for giving me a FLAC version. the guitar and voices are so great again it makes me cry.

Mods

These are very easy to get parts like pads and replacement cable defiantly a pro product.

So if you don't like the 10 foot cable here is a 6 footer  https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/885586-REG/Remote_Audio_7506sc_Replacement_Straight_Cable_for.html

if you like the 10 foot coiled and want a replacement https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/885585-REG/Remote_Audio_7506cc_Replacement_Coiled_Cable_for.html/specs

Pads are so easy to find

  1. velour https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1377752-REG/dekoni_audio_epz_mdr7506_elvl_elite_velour_replacement_earpads.html
  2. suede https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1504160-REG/dekoni_audio_epz_mdr7506_chs_choice_suede_ear_pads.html
  3. leather https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1504159-REG/dekoni_audio_epz_mdr7506_chl_choice_leather_ear_pads.html
  4. what I am going to get https://www.amazon.com/YAXI-stPad2-LR-Blue-Red/dp/B0785WRK1Z?th=1

These have great aftermarket support.

Final thoughts

I will recommend these to people that go into sound and for people that want detail. But average person probably hates these due to not have a full sound.

Also Sony knows if it ain't broke don't fix and these are one of them that's why they look old but still hold strong and still sell.

For less than 100USD these are  awesome and relatively cheap for headphones.

Any question I can try to answer.

All photos where done on a canon XTI with a 18-55mm or 50mm 1.8 with a Pixel G1s LED light panel (light on tripod).

This took me a solid hour of writing and putting my thoughts together so if you find typos I will fix them.

  • 1 year later...

Year update. These things are still in one piece. Still work really good. I am better at telling sound. These are wider then previous thought. I can see why people use them to actually monitor on singing it closed back and after eq’s it sounds good to monitor.

the clamp force is also pretty good now.

my right channel is goes a bit out but that’s due to me daily driving them on a phone in a school setting. So I am looking at a replacement cable.

Seems like a good natural upgrade from my trusty little MDR-V250s. 10+ years and they're still kicking strong apart from the in-line volume which is flakey.

I think so, I would also think the mdr7506 is more comfortable than on ear
