Does anyone know why bilibili app isn't available on playstore anymore ?

Mark Kaine

Is google scared that much of the superior service or what?

I had to update through the site... security my ass...

Is the bilibili app available in your region?  I think I saw China (or maybe it was HK) and Thailand have it in their Google "web store"...

Seems odd, im pretty sure it was available a few years / some time ago here in Europe...

Looks like it is region restricted, and could be why you couldn't find it on the Play Store search

I see, yeah that one I saw too ... (didn't know it's US) wouldn't let me download tho.

weirdly enough this one has the German "USK" label... though it's "not available" in Germany whatsoever.

Which is why I'm really curious what's even going on...

Right, but why, I can't find any info... except something from 2018, but I'm pretty sure the app was available here earlier this year. 🤔

Nope, that's tech Jesus... but close!

Oh, under that (didn't load lol) yes, it is!  I'm not surprised it's available in your region... Though now I'm just curious if it's only Germany or whole of Europe where it's not available! (we do have some fishy media conspiracy thing going on here tbf...)

nah, doesn't really look like it... I really thought it could be, especially as it's an American company, but seeing it's obviously available almost everywhere that doesn't make too much sense...

The real weird part is: as you can see in my screenshot, the app is installed - but not "available" and it's not in the Google play store, not even in "my apps", so excuse my confusion but that is certainly weird right?

(might be a "the internet is uncharted territory all of us" thing as our chancellor likes to say, after all, aka media shenanigans...) 👀

Germany is usually the one to go after privacy concerns etc in Europe, so wouldn't be surprised it's a country ban.

Honestly if it's already installed, I don't like the idea of them removing it without notifying you

Heck, if I woke up one day and one of the apps that may contain important data (like Line, for example) just disappeared, and I can't access my stuff anymore, I would be absolutely livid.

He said it's installed, just that he can't see it in the store or "my apps"...

Yeap, that's pretty much what's bothering me the most - plus lack of info...

That doesn't really make sense though since Google, Facebook, even Tencent (who btw owns bilibili) are all allowed...

Also interesting, I just downloaded *and installed* Huawei Gallery...

and

Screenshot_20201231-150645_AppGallery.thumb.jpg.6537f6d94e7ba714fbe16bdbdd9503ea.jpg

no bilibili app... :/

Screenshot_20201231-150656_AppGallery.thumb.jpg.fe66302e57bbc81cc839efd5a53bf1b4.jpg

But weibo, Tencent etc all readily available

Also :

Unrelated but pretty cool :

Screenshot_20201231-150752_AppGallery.thumb.jpg.7558f6feb1fc74a0a76b81e47012a7bc.jpg

it can update / install my Google Play apps!?

Btw the store is way faster than Google (which is a slog) too... I think it's pretty clear what my next phone is... :D

Still very odd about bilibili... I hope it's just a temporary thing!

Is it just your phone is unable to support the newest version and is this unavailable to you?

no... I mean then it should still show in "my apps" I think? plus I just installed the latest update yesterday (after the app stopped working which made me even investigate this in the first place) directly from bilibili website... and it wasn't a fresh install either, it simply updated the existing app, works without issues... 🤷🏼

oh yeah, you are correct, it used to be available though, at least in first tier cities like Beijing and Shenzhen etc...

Tho yes,

Quote

Google decided to end its mainland China operations entirely.

there aren't any Google services in mainland China... you could still access them in HK, Taiwan, etc through VPN if you really wanted to, I suppose...

But I really meant "app store" it surely is available in China (but yeah I think I had mistaken the US playstore for the HK playstore, my bad, though not a crucial factor in this case)

That was a long time ago. But I do remember when they blocked it. It made life as an expat much more difficult.
