Do I need a 1000w PSU?

Rhaemond

Hey guys I'm being offered a brand new 1000w FSP Hydro G Pro for around 145.27USD... I was looking into buying a good PSU for safety and peace of mind and I found out that this PSU is has good quality build.

Do I need this? Or should I buy a Seasonic FOCUS GX-750 750w PSU for 124.90USD?
My current build is Ryzen 7 2700 with a 1070ti, but I'm planning to upgrade to a 3000 series GPU in the future maybe the 3070 at best.

Is the 20$ difference worth it to buy the 1000w PSU? Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

Motherboard: MSI B450m Mortar Max

Processor: Ryzen 7 2700 w/ Wraith Prism

RAM: Klev Cras X 3200mhz 8gb x2

PSU: Seasonic GX-750

Case: Inplay Robin 101 + 10 fans w/ hub and remote

3070 "at the best"?  Then no.  You don't need a 1000W PSU.

So...

You can get 1000 watts for $150, and 750 watts for $130.

Get the 1000 watt for two reasons:
1. If you ever add more powerful hardware, you can handle it

2. Who doesn't want a kilowatt?

You don’t really need a 1000w PSU, but if you want some playing room for the future (adding a crap to of things) sure, but a 3070 doesnt need that

if its a $20 difference why not go for the 1000w unless you are on a tight budget

Not sure why you would even consider paying $20 more for a PSU that is louder and performs worse. The wattage won't benefit you at all. As both the Focus and the Hydro G Pro lack multi rail OCP, higher wattage would also mean a potentially less safe PSU.

Nobody in this age needs a 1000W PSU, unless they are running a server.  Getting 750W is a little excessive, but it won't hurt anything.

Wow....just wow.

You apparently base this opinion on exactly no knowledge of the requirements of the latest high end GPU.

1000 watts might be the high end of safe, but 750 is nowhere near adequate much less excessive for 3080-3090 and highest end AMD cards.

The OP may not need more than 750 watt for a 3070, but your blanket statement is clearly wrong.

They're both in the same tier, and I'm not really that knowledgeable when it comes to PSUs, was just looking for the best bang for the buck PSU I can get. Can you enlighten me please? Thank you.

3080 can use an 850W and 3090 I would suggest a 1000W.

@seon123 is correct.  If by "same tier" you mean the subjective tier list, then yes.  But that doesn't mean that both PSUs are the same quality/performance.

The 3080 does have an increased power draw, but it's still under 400W at max usage.  The 3090 is a Titan class card (not for standard consumers).  People really overestimate how much power things use.  750W is plenty for any consumer grade products you would pair with an RTX 3080, and definitely a 3070.  The AMD cards are more efficient than Nvidia's latest monstrosity.

Again you make a blanket statement that is neither born out by experience or testing.

There are several brands of 750 watt PSU that do indeed experience BSOD with the 3080.

There are also many AIB OC 3080 that draw significant loads, and the 3080TI has not been launched or tested.

While one might think 750 watt SHOULD be enough, it has proven to not be the case in numerous applications.

Depends on the card. 🙄

The ASUS Strix and EVGA FTW3 Ultra both pull well over 450W, and those are 3080's.

I have seen my 3080 FTW3 Ultra pull 468W just from the 3x 8 Pin alone, that's not including the PCIe slot, and that's directly measured from the PSU.

Now for the 2x 8 Pin cards 750W may be enough depending, but better to use an 850W.

For the 3x 8 Pin Cards a min of a 850W PSU and better yet a 1000W would be better.

you don't need a 1000w but it's more future proof and *likely* more efficient and  may even saves you money on your bill, and it's just a few bucks more, it's a no-brainer imo

and a PSU's peak efficiency is generally around 50% of total output power. So while the FSP is only $20 more, you're going to be further away from center on the efficiency curve, and there's just no point if you're never going to need that extra power.

Personally the difference in efficiency with load is that minor with modern PSUs that it really shouldn't weigh into a decision much if at all.

Like for a Focus Plus Gold say between 90-92.5% for most loads, it's negligible.

Gold.png

Getting the best quality power supply that fits within budget while having enough headroom for some changes and upgrades would be the main goal.

Some people massively overestimate the PSU requirements and end up either sacrificing quality or spending more that's not necessary that is exactly spot on with your 2nd point.

Overall I'd say mostly parts have become more efficient generally and you tend to have less peripherals and drives these days with more compact builds.

Someone getting a 1000W PSU on the off chance they get a top of the line GPU, my opinion would be the majority could save their money and the few that do that upgrade should factor in a PSU upgrade when they do get the GPU which is small change in comparison.

There can be cases where due to specials or what is stocked, where a retailer may only stock a higher wattage variant from a series or get good pricing on certain lines. A bit of overkill can be a logical choice of course.

I made no assumptions at all.

I highlighted the quotes that you made that were highly inaccurate, and provided links giving detailed support for my critique.

Experience can actually be a detriment in making accurate decisions based on current facts.

What was true yesterday may not be today, and what is true today, might become obsolete in a very short period of time.

All your posts in this thread reference the average power requirements of the GPU.

The recent issue is the extreme increase in short duration transient load.

While the 3070 and 3080 have 350-450 watt AVERAGE max power requirements...their short duration loads can be much higher.

Hence, while your experience in the past may be extensive....I don't see you referencing or making any allowances for these recent developments.

PS, My experience level only goes back to the 1970s...yours?

PSS, Nobody NEEDS any of this.

However, I WANT kit that works without fail. "Most of the time" is not what I look for in advice. If I wanted to take my chances, I wouldn't even bother to inquire from a site of supposed experienced enthusiasts.

I know my recommendations are accurate. I find yours lacking.

Yeah, most people can get by with a prebuilt system...most people do not build their own...most people do not buy high end graphics cards...most people do not take the time to spec out a system accurately.

The list goes on and on and on.

TLDR

If you bother to make a recommendation, it might as well be based on something other than your "experience" and resulting bias.

These new GPUs pull a lot more power than some seem to think they do.

I know my system can get close to the maxing out a 850W PSU if I really push it. And that is taking readings from the PSU, not from the wall.

But nobody needs a 1,000W PSU right? 🙄
