Which is the same as saying any of the currencies that aren't hard backed has value. All 3 are arbitrary statements. The differance is those currencies and crypto have got agreement from enough people that they have value that said agreement makes the reality be that they have value.

 

That at it's core is how any currency without hard goods backing works.

Gpu mining is already hanging by a thread (obscure shitcoins need to apply). Ethereum is progressing to a point of stake, so ethereum 2.0 will not be minable. Which means the two most prominent cryptos will not be minable by anything other than an asic.

What will probably happen is that ethereum will be replaced with something else. The big cryptocurrency is still bitcoin and that's what everyone knows and hears about.

Ethereum carries the mining part, bitcoin carries the actual value and the hype.

I don’t know what “point of stake” means.  I found “proof of stake” but apparently only some cryptocoins use it.  I don’t know it etherium is one or not.

Ethereum will have proof of stake as alternative method of validating transactions ... basically you "stake" some amount of eth (around 25 ETH minimum if my memory is correct) and you connect to the network as a validator and multiple people validate transactions and guarantee transactions, receiving in return a small amount of eth for the work ... basically they estimate about 8% interest / "profit" on the ETH amount you stake at the end of a year.

If you lie and validate a transaction as correct but the majority marks it invalid, you're "fined" and you lose some of the staked eth

 

As for the guy who can't figure out the benefits of such currencies ... he should think harder.

 

Such currencies have the potential to kill services like western union, money gram, which take 10-15% of the amount in fees, can make it easier to buy products without having to go through credit card processors and payment processors that may not accept some categories of content (ex porn, manga/hentai comics, marijuana or other things legal in your region but controversial in other places,  vape stuff - don't agree with it but nevertheless it can help some people stop smoking and for example paypal has recently just frozen or stolen tens of thousands of dollars from various sellers that sold vaping products through paypal.

Even stuff like paying for your rent could be simplified... you guys in US still write checks and if you want to pay with a credit card they take a 20-30$ processing fee or some crap like that, because the credit card takes 2-5% in fees when you pay with your card.

 

Yeah. mining consumes a lot of power, but it's not the worst way to consume power... for example aluminum smelting plants consume way way way more power but you're not complaining and asking them to shut down.

Im not kidding it really is the only way to pay premium now that all credit cards have dropped it which makes me realize how absolutely asinine and flawed our electronic currency system is since essentially credit card companies can have complete control on what you can and can't purchase on the internet.
In that sense I 100% understand the draw to crypto...

However I still find the method of generating it it's self asinine vs just having a better electronic currency system that does not rely on private entities.
and I am afraid to say I think we are a minority opinion on this forum =/

Hahaha crypto bad, crypto ASIC go brrrr. Cyrpto has very real world applications and is already well embedded into society. The environmental impact is measurable but is no where near the impact of manufactures processes in countries like India and China or what burning fossil fuels does to the environment

it isnt but ethereum is starting its phase into Eth 2.0 which will be proof of stake, and not minable. Its going to take more than a year for this to happen though.

I myself mine alt coins and get money out of it, but I only do so during winters. My PC is in my office in the basement, by mining, I don't have to open any electrical baseboards (in my office and the main room beside, still have to heat the room where the washer and dryer are since that's barely insulated and is where the water inlet and drain are) and so I don't need to waste money heating (heating with an electrical baseboard is literally throwing money out the window, so mining at least subsidize part of my electrical bill). Also, my province electrical production is 100% renewables (mostly hydro, some wind mills, and nuclear), and is also VERY cheap (between $0.05-$0.07 kwh USD).

 

So yeah, I could avoid crypto mining, but then I would use the same amount of electricity, yet get nothing out of it.

 

BTW, if your statement is limited to farm crypto mining operations, then yeah, I do agree.

I managed to get my 3080 just before Xmas (after waiting since September for my preorder to be fulfilled). Seeing this image makes me wish that all those cards would go up in black smoke and stop working, these people are ruining it for people who genuinely want these to play games.

+ Proof of stake is a thing and is being tested to help reduce the impact (though proof of work is kind of necessary as a starting point). 

I'm surprised to see people buying GPU's for mining right now with the main source of income (Ethereum) working towards going PoS. 

The current monetary system uses electricity too. (not in the same way, but it does). I don't have any stats on it though so not sure how it compares. If crypto was fully mainstream, banks as a building (space, electricity, etc.) is kind of unnecessary so that's a way to look at it. How much power do banks use collectively? lol

That said I'm not sure crypto will be used as everyday currency due to the scaling issues (which they might figure out and maintain security who knows). I feel like it's a commodity like gold, and more for wealth preservation (just is easier to manage than say, moving gold bricks around).

But not to stray too far from topic, if it's going to be a part of our wealth/monetary systems, then the power usage is justifiable. IF CRYPTO FAILS... then well.. it's a waste. But we are arguably too far in for it to fail at this point.

Or it's because they're just willing to pay the higher price for it because it makes sense for their use case, which makes the value of the product that much more, and makes it unappetizing to gamers?

Why don't these companies come up with cards for each though? Special mining cards and Graphics cards for gaming, im sure there is something they could do to the bios or firmware that would make graphics cards less effective in mining without hindering the performance for gaming, so that way people can have the best of both worlds, miners get there cards and gamers get there's.

they did have mining specific GPUs, but it was unpopular because the risk is higher, because they're worthless on 2nd hand market

The GPU AIB's have tried before, it wasn't successful enough to split the product lines because miners would rather buy a gaming GPU then pass off the cards on ebay to gamers. Its funny cuz I usually see so many mentions of "miners care more about their GPU than gamers" yet most of the pics I've seen of miners bragging at how many cards they've got are all sitting out in the open, not in a case with optimized airflow that the GPU is designed for.

They already have.  That was multiple years ago. 

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.
