GPU fans not spinning is BAD?

So I got a GTX 960 from Gigabyte G1 Gaming, This card's fans do not spin until the temperature hits 50*C, and I think this is worse than having the fans on all the time. Let's say I play a game for a hour, then I go on youtube,  then play a game for a hour, then go on the internet, then play a game again, and then going on facebook - I think the fans constantly switching on and off can hurt their longevity more than having them run all the time. I think one day the on/off mechanism will break and one of the fans will just not start.

This is normal and what they are designed to do.

The GPU itself will probably die before the fans do.

There's no mechanical part involved in switching it on so there's no worries there

If anything, the fan bearing might break from the on and off, but the wear of having it constantly turn is worse, I would think

I've had a fan bearing die within warranty (2 years or so)

Might just be unlucky, though

Never happened with any other of my GPU

My PCs: Desky | Beddie | Miney | Benchie

Things I need help with: (nothing at the moment)

Spoiler

none atm

I hate Intel's pricing, Ryzen's weird quirks, Nvidia's pricing, and Radeon GPUs in general

Spoiler

Products I like:

Spoiler

Sony Xperia Z1 / Z2 / 10 ii, Asus Strix 970 / 1070, Samsung SSD, WD HDD, Corsair PSUs (AX, RM, CX(grey)), GeForce GPU, NZXT N450/S340, be quiet! Coolers, G.Skill Trident RAM, Logitech M525, Logitech G440, Razer Deathadder Elite

Products I hate:

Spoiler

Xperia Z3, XiaoMi 5c, Radeon GPUs, Razer Audio Products, any bloatwares

Companies I absolutely adore: (and hope it stays that way)

Spoiler

be quiet! - sent me AM4 mounting for my DRP3 even though it's way past the timeframe stated, no questions asked

Corsair - very good RMA experience, absolutely recommend

Companies I hate:

Spoiler

Nvidia, Intel, Apple, TMT (Thundermatch, a retailer)

Personal Blacklisted Companies:

Spoiler

Acer: shit tier quality products, shit tier customer service thus far, they "tried" to solve my issue but they arent really doing anything but delaying and delaying. (on-going case since July)

Gigabyte: horrible customer service (gigabyte had literally 0 customer service, asked me to go to retailer with NO WAY to email them about a question) but at least they fixed my shit in ONE MONTH (would probably take me 1 hour to fix if they let me email them)

XiaoMi Phones: built like a tank but the software is buggy as all hell

Seagate HDD: had too many dead seagate drives

Kingston SSD: 300V controller swap thingy

Razer (except their mouse)

Remember, just because I had good/bad experiences with these companies/product, doesn't mean you will have similar experiences too. I would still recommend these products if they made sense for your needs, but I'll add a disclaimer of my experience if it's relevant. Feel free to DM me asking why they are where they are.

  • 3 weeks later...

I'm some months late but I just found this neat thing in MSI Afterburner , lol! In settings, there is a "Fan" tab, and I can enable user fan control! From there I can set what fan speed to be on what temp! I set fans to 10% when the temp range is between 0 - 40*C, now I'm not worrying about fans turning on and off a lot, they are always running at low speed. Lol didn't knew about this feature!

I wouldn't worry about them breaking, as someone has already pointed out, the fans will be the last thing to die!

Only reason I'd suggest to have fans running all the time is to prevent that jarring increase in noise when you get in to a game or possibly just to increase airflow generally in the case.
