I'm guessing setting up the desktop without a case would be a bad idea?

Jonboy12

Yeah I'm just an impatient idiot, I have all the parts to make a desktop except the case which is going to take a bit more than a week.

For testing certain components it’s fine, but for an actual PC you would use on the daily I wouldn’t

You coullldd but would I do it myself, no. If you know nothing is going to harm it by exposing all of your parts like that, then maybe but if you have a HDD laying around, I would definitely not use it.

You can set it up temporarily to test components while they're still in the return window

For long term use, nah, not a great idea

It works, but nah, for many reasons

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

I've ran systems like that for weeks at a time. ESD maybe if your table conducts, I did mine on wood.  and I haven't seen EMI do anything meaningful to a PC

Just make sure you do it on the motherboard's box, and your house is as close to sterile as you can get it.

That being said, I've done that probably a dozen times. It's basically a test bench. I'll get windows installed and all that before I put it in a case sometimes, just to make sure if anything not working, I don't have to do finger gymnastics to get to it.

Just be careful if your mb doesn't have a power button. Gotta jump start it just right.

I would wait.

If you're feeling really impatient and you have some spare change and can travel, I would check the local sellers and buy someone's 'cheaper-than-a-new-case' full desktop PC and use that case. The bonus is you now have a second PC or (at the very least) some spare diagnostic parts...for almost nothing.
