 UK MPs will be looking to discuss the possibility of banning the resale of computer components & consoles at inflated prices in a similar vain as event tickets.

My thoughts

This is a small step in the right direction considering how difficult it is to buy the latest GPUs, CPUs, and consoles, though as the article points out it could be a while before this leads anywhere.

 

If it is fruitful then hopefully the rest of the world will follow suite, although I don't expect it to stop scalpers entirely but may still deter some.

I would just make purchases through bots illegal, might as well go straight to the source... it's much harder to prove that any given graphics card was bought through a bot and therefore can't be resold as opposed to proving that at least one card was bought that way.

I get that people are currently very riled up about scalpers but seriously, why should it be illegal to buy something with a bot? Besides, how is this going to be enforced?

Seems like just a political party trying to jerk off some dumb people by going "see we care about you" when in reality it won't lead anywhere.

I don't see how is this going to increase the number of cards.

It's going to end up with people with lots of bot-bought stock that they don't know what to do with.

So they have a few options:
Sell it (illegal)

Give it away

Return it

Let me explain this in simple terms: if there are 10 apples and 15 people want an apple, but I buy 9 of them before anyone else gets to because I used a bot, then 8 people will be needlessly left without an apple or will be forced to pay an inflated price and buy one from me. If I hadn't done that then more people would have been able to get the apple they wanted.

Sometimes just having a law in place can deter some people even if realistically there might not be any repercussions e.g. Look at how at people who don't pirate stuff despite the chance of getting caught and being penalised is pretty low.

This is a small step in the right direction considering how difficult it is to buy the latest GPUs, CPUs, and consoles, though as the article points out it could be a while before this leads anywhere.

 

If it is fruitful then hopefully the rest of the world will follow suite, although I don't expect it to stop scalpers entirely but may still deter some.

As much as I'd like to see the end of scalping, I don't agree with the regulation of private sales. I want to be able to sell what I've got for whatever I want. Yeah scalpers suck, but I don't think it's worth regulating everyone because of short term issues

It would need to be carefully worded to ensure you're not going to penalised for wanting to sell an old card a year down the line. The idea is to prevent situations like we currently have where people are buying cards purely to sell them online at an incredibly inflated price to the point where it's impossible to buy one for RRP/MSRP.

No, laws cannot retroactively make illegal things you've already done and punish you for it. So the stock already bought by them is gone.

So far, we have a list of MP signing a motion, asking for "something" to happen. If this ever crystalizes into a bill of some kind, we'll see what the terms look like.

I'm pretty sure piracy is a far more widespread activity than scalping to begin with... I don't think this example works the way you intended to.

I agree no one seems to have cared about bots buying concert tickets since the early 2000s or bots buying designer clothes drops.

I don't know how "early day motions" usually do, but it being bought by the SNP in itself doesn't raise my confidence this will get anywhere fast. Ruling party might go against it as they don't want to give the credit to another party for coming up with the idea.

 

Also it is taken at a high level. Does the political system as a whole want to do something? The detail will have to be worked out later. There will be challenges to coming up with rules that can do the intended without unintended side effects.

This is probably more in response to bots buying up PPE and cleaning supplies during COVID-19. If you really think the Government cares that you can't get your PS5 or RTX 3070, you're kidding yourself. This is for more important items.

I'm pretty sure piracy is a far more widespread activity than scalping to begin with... I don't think this example works the way you intended to.

What I meant was that there are people who won't pirate because they're afraid because it's illegal. Yes lots of people pirate, but a small portion of people don't because they're afraid of non-existent consequences so it works as a deterrent even if only on a very small scale.

But there are now laws in place to make it illegal to resell concert tickets. Sure it may have taken a long time to get here, but better late than never. I'm personally not expecting anything to come out of this for a long, but even a formal discussion is a small step in the right direction.
