Microstutter in a bunch of games

How should I go about clearing the cmos, I've never done it before.

Turn off the switch on your PSU, and open your casing side panel

You'll have to locate a pair of pins that's labelled CLR_CMOS or smth, refer to your motherboard manual for that

They're normally on the bottom right of the board, locate and short them with something conductive for 5 seconds, and then power your rig back on

This will remove any bios settings you made, including docp/XMP profiles, but that's fine, we want to test on the default settings as that's most likely the most stable

To start off, the issues only started once I upgraded my GPU to an RTX 3080 but from running benchmarks I believe the issue is with something else. I've been troubleshooting for over a month now here is my system specs and what I've tried.

GPU: MSI Ventus OC RTX 3080

CPU: Intel I7-8700

RAM: G.SKILL DDR4 3600

MOBO: MSI MPG Z390 (Bios version 7B17vAB)

SSD: Samsung EVO 970 1tb

PSU: Corsair 750W Gold

OS: Windows 10

The bios and all drivers are up to date

Things I have tried:

  • Replaced my motherboard from a Z370P D3.
  • Used different ram
  • Undervolting my GPU
  • Reducing the polling rate on my mouse from 1000 to 500
  • Reinstalling WIndows

Games with issues:

    High CPU usage games:

  • COD CW - massive stutters but only due to 100% cpu usage, lower settings doesn't seem to help though
  • Destiny 2 - Same issue as COD CW

    Low CPU usage games:

  • Minecraft - Runs the worst out of all the games listed
  • Valorant - really miner stutters with 30% cpu usage
  • VRchat desktop - Low gpu and cpu usage with micro stuttering while moving my mouse around
  • There are others I can't think of them atm though.

I've also ran a couple of bench marks which are the attached files, ive also included the logs I saved while doing the Superposition benchmark.

Another thing to note is I failed the 3D mark Time Spy stress test with 96.2%, 97% is the required score. Plus while running the UFO test it reports a stutter of 1+.

That's all I can think of, I've probably done more but I can't remember as I have already tried so much.

I ram Memtest64, that came up with no problems.

Should I try memtest86?

U can, there's no harm

But this isn't likely a RAM issue, though I can't think of what might be causing it

Ram would normally cause your system to just hard shut down instead of stuttering

What speed is it running at?

How's the storage usage like when it's stuttering?

You did a fresh windows install from a USB stick? Or factory reset? Usb stick is preferred

Also, even tho reinstalling OS would include this part, but you can also try running DDU and reinstalling your graphics drivers, see how it goes

Ram speed is running at 3600 MHz, storage usage is normal/not high and I reinstalled windows from a USB stick.

Try running the RAM slower, maybe 2666

I lowered my RAM to 2666MHz and the stuttering is still there on Destiny 2 and vrchat.

Also I noticed lower performance in destiny 2 after doing this change.

Hmm... Then I'm out of ideas

Slightly lower performance is expected

Try some other stuff I mentioned

I'll try the memtest86 tomorrow morning as it is late, I'm assuming this thread will be buried by then, should I try making a new one at that point?

Yea sure, but link it back to this one

Though this is a weird issue that I don't think many people will know the answer to

Try resetting cmos too

Ill try that as well, you think it may potentially be a PSU issue it's about 5-6 years old now.

Psu normally doesn't cause stuttering, it's just a hard shut down in most cases

Temps are all under control unless I'm playing COD CW with 80%-100% cpu usage for a long period of time, but it won't go over 80c.

Everything else is running cool.

Sounds fine

Hmm... This is baffling tbh

I guess could give cmos clear a try

Turn off the switch on your PSU, and open your casing side panel

You'll have to locate a pair of pins that's labelled CLR_CMOS or smth, refer to your motherboard manual for that

They're normally on the bottom right of the board, locate and short them with something conductive for 5 seconds, and then power your rig back on

This will remove any bios settings you made, including docp/XMP profiles, but that's fine, we want to test on the default settings as that's most likely the most stable

Alright Ill give that and the memtest86 a try tomorrow morning, I hope I can figure out what's wrong.

Oh also something else I forgot to mention, when my computer isn't underload my CPU fluctuates between 4.27GHz to around 2.0GHz.

Huh clearing CMOS seemed to work, also for christmas I plan on upgrading my CPU because I have no idea what else I'd need/want do you think upgraded from a i7-8700 to an i9-9900k would be worth it?

glad it worked

but dont forget to re-enable XMP

if the stuttering is back then we know it's RAM related

going from 6 core to 8 core makes little sense for games today, though some games may see some improvements

i'd say u can go for it if the price is cheap (i doubt it'll be cheap), but you wont immediately see the benefit other than slightly higher fps in cpu-bound games

but games in the next few years may utilise 8 cores, then it'll shine

but you can always upgrade then, not now

Yeah XMP is enabled, and nothing happened not sure what else I did in the bios because I just got it not that long ago.

I can grab one for about $430 CAD which is pretty good, but tbh other than that I'm not really sure what I could even get. Another M.2? lmao

Parents spend a set amount every year, despite if I give them any ideas or not so can't do that sadly.
