i was wonder if i could leave my pc on over night and if it would hurt my pc 

 

here are my specs if it matters 

rtx 3070 amd ryzen 7 3700x 16 gigs of ram

I can't remember the last time I turned my computer off.

You should be fine. Assuming your house isn't relocated underwater while you sleep.

Though I imagine you'd have other problems at that point.

Wont hurt your PC but may hurt your wallet lol.

 

I run it usually for a few days without even a restart but after a few days I usually reboot it if I feel like it.

The server at my office runs 24 hours a day for 5-6 years at a time, until we move again. You'll be fine.

Yes it's fine. I do recommend turning the computer off to save electricity tho, unless you simply don't need to worry about that.

When you're not doing anything, your main processors and GPU will clock down and not be under any strain. So no concern over accelerating any ageing within them. You might even be able to argue (I honestly have no idea) the stress and strain of shutting down and restarting, all the components cooling down, then reheating, re-powering up all your capacitors etc, flicking all the internal power switches etc will be the most strenuous part of running a PC so not turning on / off minimises this.

 

However, leaving your PC on overnight will accelerate dust build up and possible wear on your fans. If you have an old platter hard-drive and it keeps spooling that up and down, it'll put a lot more wear into that, but again nothing like drops and bumps would.

 

TBH, you'll be fine though. If a components going to fail, it's going to fail because it's faulty. All the standard wear and tear of general use will only become apparent years after your PC becomes obsolete anyway.

Well servers are usually a bit different in terms of hardware, assuming you talking about a real server and not "just a big HDD PC"

I used folding at home and now Boinc, that means my PC is under load for many months now, I need to clean filters more often, but hardware is ok

"Modern" PCs (Conroe or later) have a feature known as "dynamic frequency scaling" hence they automatically underclock and undervolt as per the task at hand. 

 

My ancient C2D E8400 machine, for instance, peaks at 3.00GHz at 1,200mV and goes all the way down to just 1.8GHz @ 1,000mV at idle with thermals hovering around 40c. 

 

Intel calls it "SpeedStep" whereas AMD calls it "Cool'n'Quiet".

 

GPUs have a similar feature, albeit far more aggressive. My old Fermi goes ALL the way down to 50MHz (base/memory clock) at just 880mV!

i've never turned off my PC, have kept it on as long as 21 days during lockdown. i do use Sleep function though

Depending on where he lives, it might not matter if he uses electricity or not. Hydro, for example, often over produces at night, so you're not really causing more pollution or strain by running anything.

I have 2 servers that are just a mix of old an new hardware and they have been running 24/7 for years and 0 issues.

Nothing I run is actually server hardware, it's just basic stuff.

I leave my PC on for days on end when I'm away from home. Never had any problems.

 

That being said, it obviously expends more power that way, wears down the fans faster, and accumulates more dust. Unless you have a reason for it to be on all the time, I don't see why you wouldn't turn it off when you're not using it.

My X58 spent the better part of a half a decade turned on. Before "modern" systems, I always had problems waking my pc from sleep. Usually a bluescreen, so I just disabled sleep and just powered off for maintenance. I just built a new computer that doesn't seem to want to sleep on its own, I have to tell it. Just like my kids.

I see loads of comments about components drawing less power unloaded etc. but at the end of the day, it's just sitting there consuming more power than you'd expect, especially considering your power supply isn't very efficient at low loads.

 

Note: the following rant applies to people running computers (at night) with no reason at all. As in, completely idling.

 

In the old days with mechanical drives and 2+ mins of boot time, I can sort of see why you'd do it, but these days, with all computers having SSDs and many people using sleep mode instead of full shutdown, I don't see any good reason to leave the thing running unused all the time. You can literally boot it up in less than 10 seconds. What are you worried about? It's a complete waste of energy.

 

It's like leaving a 60W light bulb on 24/7 even when there's no one in the room; that's been considered dumb for decades. A computer doing nothing is exactly the same, yet that seems perfectly acceptable.

 

People are trying to do their damn best to reduce emissions and all that, investing loads of money into renewables/nuclear power, trying to better insulate homes, modifying infrastructure, buying expensive electric vehicles etc. and all of that for these marginal gains, and then here you come with your stupid gaming PC that for some reason needs to run all night. (that probably wouldn't even have to run at all in the first place, as most of us let's be honest, could do with some laptop, but let's not get into that).

 

TLDR: out of all the things you could do to save some energy, shutting down your computer at night is the very least you could do.
