"merging" 4*1080p screens into a 4k display

Hi to all

I have access to a set of 4 identical 1080p screens (from a local recycler) and I wanted to combine them in a 2 by 2 grid to make a single big monitor which would be of 4k resolution.

However these are the ports available on my graphics card: 1 DisplayPort 1.4a and 1 HDMI 2.1.

I was therefore wondering if you knew of a system that would "request" a 4k image from the graphics card on a single cable (DP or HDMI) and then split it onto the 4 displays.

The only one I found was the Quadhead2go which retails for a fortune.

I'm a computer science student so more on the cheap side and I don't mind doing DYI.

PS: I have an extra PCIe slot if needed.

why not use eyefinity or nvidia surrounds on your gpu? you should be able to do all of this in your gpu. what gpu do you have?

Don't really think these exist and it would probably add a ton of latency.

I am waiting on a Gigabyte rtx 3070.

My 2 primary displays (each 1080p) take up 2 of the 4 ports.

But when I am doing software development or wanting to watch a movie they're to small.

Hence when I stumbled upon the 4*1080p panels for dirt cheap I took them and DIY them into a 2 by 2 grid.

But this grid needs 4 display connections which I don't have.

I am looking for a hardware solution, not software.  

As this would be for productivity tasks, latency is not an issue.

You could rephrase my question like this:

Not caring about latency, how could you connect more screens than ports available on your graphics card?

then you want nvidia surround. that will do all you want.

There no great ways to do it. MST hubs may work.

MST hubs are indeed what I was looking for but I could not find the proper keyword.
