New PSU or keep old one?

lyon811

Hi, I'm in the middle of building a new PC and just want yall's opinion on it. I got rtx 3080 and a 5800x. My PSU that I plan to use is the same one I've had since 2016, a EVGA supernova nex 750b. I've had no problems with it, and it's this would be the third system it's been in. I know that 750 watts is good enough for a 3080 and a 5800x, with room for overclocking, but that fact that's its almost 5 years old worries me just a bit. I've read that old PSU's, if made by a reliable manfuacter, can last for 10+ years. IDK if I should just go ahead and buy a 850 watt or just stick with this one. Let me know what yall think.

I wouldn't trust it. If it were a higher-end unit, it'd be fine, but it's group-regulated and therefore pretty bad all around. Reviews also mention the rail distribution being pretty weird, which would cast doubt on its ability to run reliably near its actual capacity.

NO, replace the PSU with a better quality unit like a Corsair RM or RMX, EVGA P2, G3 etc.

Normally when the PSU is good, at least good by 2016 standards, the PSU should not fry your system, that usually only happens with garbage PSUs.

A decent quality PSU will instead just shut down your computer. Usually this happens after tripping the overcurrent protection with the RTX 3080.

Which means you can at least try to run that RTX 3080 with your old PSU.

That being said I would still buy a new high quality PSU. Consult the PSU tier list and get something from Tier A with enough wattage.
