Want to migrate os onto new ssd, but says its too small.

I bought a new Samsung 970 EVO 500GB and initialized it. However, whenever I try to migrate my os onto it, even when its empty, it says theres not enough room and another program said 775 gb was needed to do it. I'm confused as to how that's possible and what I could do to maybe solve this?

I'm running Windows 10 64 bit. 

Specs: 800W PSU, i7-7700K, GTX 1060, 16gb, 1TB HHD, 500GB SSD, and Click BIOS 5 | ACPI 5.0.

these programs typically try to copy the entire partition information so even if your current usage on your OS drive is below the capacity of your new drive it will not work if the partition is bigger than your new drive.

 

generally i would strongly recommend to simply reinstall windows on the SSD as this will also trigger that windows automatically makes a bunch of settings automatically that will help with the SSD´s performance and lifetime.

Otherwise you can use Macrium Reflect which is able to resize partitions to fit the new drive. Although from your image, it looks like you are using a large percentage of the space of your 1TB drive. You'll need to reduce that down to below 465.75GB if you want to copy the partition.

Would I just use the Windows reinstallation disc that came with the computer and choose to install it on the new SSD?

Also would that automatically free the load off the HDD? (if thats where my problems came form in the first place)

You should make a USB installation Media using the Windows Media Creation Tool so that you have the latest version of Windows.

It is the "best practice" to have only one drive plugged into your system while installing Windows. Strange things can happen if you have multiple drives plugged in during the installation, especially if Windows is already installed on one like you have.

No, the old installation of Windows will remain on the old drive. You'll have to move your files and format the disc in order to wipe out the old Windows installation.
