RTX 3080 FE + i7-6700k Dumb?

Well, if I were you, I'd upgrade the GPU and monitor now with the intent of upgrading everything else down the line. 6700K is still pretty good. You'll be missing out on some performance, but not a ridiculous amount. It's sort of an edge case. A i5 6600K for instance, would make no sense at all with a RTX 3080, imo. But an OCed 6700K is on the other side of that line, again imo.

Hey guys,

planning my purchases ahead and looking to upgrade my current system has an i7-6700k and a GTX 1080. I'm thinking that I could squeeze out a small loan of a million dollars *ahem* sorry a small budget from my summer job earnings to buy an RTX 3080 FE since I don't have enough money to build a whole new system I'll just upgrade my graphics card. I play GPU dependent games like The Witcher 3.

Dumb idea?

By the time I have a decent budget for a completely new system it'll be 2022.

I need a second opinion.

Thank you!

My PC is a fast boyo:

6700K - 32GB - 1080 - 256GB EVO

If you get a 1440p 144hz you'll have enough for CPU + mobo too.

The 3080 is overkill for 1080p, and your 6700K will struggle to feed the GPU with hundreds of frames per second (at any resolution). If you were a 4k 60Hz kinda dude, then this config might make sense. But otherwise, it doesn't really. At least not for now.

You'll still get great performance, and you could look forward to a noticeable improvement when you upgrade the rest of your system (maybe next summer?)

Yep you're right, hopefully NVidia will still be making FEs by the time I wanna make my purchase.
