A New Benchmark for a HP Omen PC has appeared on Geekbench equipped with a new intel CPU, with performance numbers close but still behind the Ryzen 7 5800X

The CPU has not exceeded the 5.0 GHz barrier during the test, but various rumors claim that it should be broken by certain Rocket Lake-S SKUs. Whether this SKU is the flagship model running at full potential or an early engineering sample of a slower model, we don’t know yet. The processor was tested using an HP OPEN 30L gaming desktop (codenamed GT13-0xxx) which is equipped with an HP 886C motherboard. We were unable to find any information on this particular motherboard, hence it is possible that we are looking at the Intel 500-series model, which is expected to debut alongside the Rocket Lake-S processor series.

 

Intel Rocket Lake-S CPUs feature new Cypress Cove core architecture going up to 8 cores and 16 threads. This is unlike the current series, as the Comet Lake-S offer up to 10 cores and 20 threads. With double-digit IPC improvement, as Intel official claims, the CPU should not only match but also offer higher performance than the current generation.

Thoughts: If Intel can somehow price their products low now, it might actually beat AMD in price over performance and maybe win back some potential customers. However I also suspect that the new chip can actually go faster but HP's usual poor thermal/power management is bringing it down, as seen with Linus' recent video. One thing I would like to ask, has the IPC improvement as good as Intel claimed back on LTT's Zen 3 review video?

I still won't say Intel isn't in a position where they can't compete. Certainty the difference isn't as bad as people hype it up to be. It's not like we're seeing FX vs Core iX performance differences. That was truly a scenario where one of the two competitors had zero chance. Yay more cores! Except... they weren't actually more cores... In fact it was sort of fewer cores compared to Phenom...

I'd look at it positively for Intel. This is them making the best of a bad situation. So, throw in the 14+++++ jokes, but if they can roughly match Zen 3 performance at equal core count, it is a good catch up release. Not an overtake, but a catchup is better than falling further behind. Also don't forget that this might be a short generation, if there are no substantial delays. This is meant to be out Q1, and we get its 10nm successor in Q4.

Just going 10nm will enable the benefits shown in Tiger Lake from having more cache. Rocket Lake is essentially a generation behind that at Ice Lake like IPC, but hopefully without its clock limitations. After Rocket Lake, desktop will essentially skip a generation and is expected to go Alder Lake, which they'll have to make good as by then it'll be awfully close to Zen 4 time.

Between this and Intel only selling 5,000 10th/9th gen CPUs compared to 35,000 for AMD Zen 3 and Zen 2 on MindFactory (German retailer), this doesn't look good for Intel.

Holy shit!  Didn't know it was that big a disparity lol!

 

But it makes sense at the same time.  Intel is selling things mostly based on reputation, not better real-world performance, pricing, thermals or efficiency.  Now, they are only preferred for specific use cases (MATLAB, Adobe Premier, maybe a few games) and Ryzen 5000 might take some of those away, too.

A bit longer. So Intel will really be desperate and really crank things up to eleven. You know, how they did with Core architecture back in the day that was really revolution compared to garbage Pentiums.

IDK, my experience with Adobe products tells me that it is very poorly optimized for... anything, basically.

Hell, the reason why 10-bit is even such a big deal in Nvidia-land is the fact that Adobe refuses to upgrade their APIs from OpenGL, where 10bit is locked to Quadros, to DirectX and Vulkan, where 10bit is supported on GeForce line

This is a terrible comparison. A prebuilt will cut corners everywhere to save money so the motherboard power delivery is probably shit, shit PSU, shit cooling, and a shit OC profile.

The purpose of my CPU is to perform billions of binary operations per second. Whichever one does that best for the price within my budget, at the time I am buying, is the one I will buy. I couldn't care less whether the little sticker on the casing is red or blue.

 

That said. it will be sad to see the end of the proper competition between the two brands - AMD becoming complacent is not something we want to happen, at all. (Though hopefully they will learn from Intel's mistakes and not become quite as bad as they clearly have)

So if it’s slower they need to sell it for less than the AMD chip.  Ryzen 2 was slower than top end intel for gaming, but ryzen was reasonably close and it was cheaper so it won.  It’s a pretty simple algorithm.  If you can’t beat them in raw performance, beat them in price/performance.  Theres a point where a chip is so slow that won’t work, but if the new intel is at least close they’re close enough to compete.  These days all that really has to be done is beat a 3700x with an 8 core.  Anything that can do that is competitive enough speed wise.

Almost grabbed 10850k for 390 because of this
