iCloud on another Cloud - Amazon Web Service now offer Mac Minis.

williamcll

Interestingly, the macs Amazon using are just last generation Mac Mini clusters, not the new ARM desktops or Mac Pro server racks.

Quote

Amazon EC2 Mac instances enable customers to run on-demand macOS workloads in the cloud for the first time, extending the flexibility, scalability, and cost benefits of AWS to all Apple developers. With EC2 Mac instances, developers creating apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and Safari can provision and access macOS environments within minutes, dynamically scale capacity as needed, and benefit from AWS’s pay-as-you-go pricing. Powered by AWS Nitro System, EC2 Mac instances are built on Apple Mac mini computers featuring Intel Core i7 processors, and offer customers a choice of both macOS Mojave (10.14) and macOS Catalina (10.15) operating systems, with support for macOS Big Sur (11.0) coming soon.

Amazon EC2 Mac instances are built on Apple Mac mini computers, featuring 8th Generation 3.2GHz (4.6GHz turbo) Intel Core i7 processors with 6 physical/12 logical cores, and 32GiB of Memory. Amazon EC2 Mac instances are uniquely enabled by the AWS Nitro System, which makes it possible to offer Mac mini computers as fully integrated and managed EC2 instances to provide 10 Gbps of VPC network bandwidth and 8 Gbps of EBS storage bandwidth.

Thoughts: It's useful for people who don't want to operate their own mac mini clusters which are already pretty expensive to begin with. Though I think this is just a move by apple to empty their Mac Mini inventories to make more space for M1 models.

I think Apple needs to bring back XServer ASAP with Apple Silicon. They could make some serious gains in the server space if they offer something competitive

I think Apple needs to bring back XServer ASAP with Apple Silicon. They could make some serious gains in the server space if they offer something competitive

I mean at the moment you could get a rack Mac Pro with MacOS server installed. Don't think High corecount AS chips will come out soon unless Apple goes for the chiplet design as opposed to some >32 core ARM enterprise processors from other companies.

Specs: Motherboard: Asus X470-PLUS TUF gaming (Yes I know it's poor but I wasn't informed) RAM: Corsair VENGEANCE® LPX DDR4 3200Mhz CL16-18-18-36 2x8GB

It's stupid that they need to do that instead of simply licensing OS X and running on same servers that already have Windows and Linux instances.

As if it were that simple.

You'd be introducing loads more work to ensure compatibility and validation.

It's something they don't and never have wanted to leave in-house.

It's how they want to run their own show.

Not stupid if it works.

For Windows/Linux one of its biggest strengths is the ability to accept just about any hardware but this is also it's greatest downfall because it can create scenarios which OS and hardware behavior are undefined. Look at it like modding games, every time you load an additional mod there's a decent chance that the mods will interact in a way in which is undefined for both mods and the game. Now on the other side of the coin you got OS X where it accepts only a limited selection of hardware and that's it. It's not very expandable but it always functions in a well defined manor. It also allows you to make optimizations that would have normally been untenable on a system that allows anything for a hardware configuration.

I am not a fan of apple but the whole black box thing really has some benefits.

It's stupid that they need to do that instead of simply licensing OS X and running on same servers that already have Windows and Linux instances.

Apple isn’t a software developer first, their entire business revolves around selling hardware. Why would they start licensing their software to third parties to compete with themselves?

Beyond that, macOS is already open source. If Amazon really wanted to they could take Darwin and spin up something usable if there really was demand. There doesn’t seem to be, though.

because you could easily get amazon to fork over say 1-2k a year for an upto 8 core license.

I mean at the moment you could get a rack Mac Pro with MacOS server installed. Don't think High corecount AS chips will come out soon unless Apple goes for the chiplet design as opposed to some >32 core ARM enterprise processors from other companies.

those could make sense if amazon could order them without CPU+memory and then get good pricing on them but as it stands the 28 core would replace 6 mac minis at a cost of 16k vs 12k for 6 machines and mac minis should be more dense per RU.

Because it's in their best interest developers keep supporting their platform? And providing cheap cloud instances would make development for Mac cheaper (especially for CI and testing)? And that would ultimately translate into better software and more cross-platform support?

Mac OS isn't open sourced. The kernel is, but it is useless without everything around it (library, tooling, etc) and without proper licensing.

The demand is high enough that people pay 10x/5x the price of a Linux/Windows instance to rent a stupid Mac mini... (GitHub prices)

Darwin isn’t a kernel... The OS is absolutely open source and can be run. Hell, Apple used to make bootable ISOs for the lazy and uninitiated.

Secondly, developers already fall over themselves to release software on Mac. Not having access to third party virtual machines running on third party hardware hasn’t been an issue so far, why is it one now?

The demand isn’t driving those prices that high either, the prices are high because they’re using literal Mac Minis and not some ultra scalable server blades.

I think you're confused.

No, I think you're confused. You're obviously not in the industry and sound like you're misunderstanding the Google results you're reading.

XNU is a kernel: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XNU

Darwin is an OS: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darwin_(operating_system)

OpenDarwin (now called PureDarwin) is a community made spin of Darwin since PureDarwin was abandoned: http://www.puredarwin.org

Darwin, the open source OS from Apple is still fully runnable, straight from them. It's a command line OS. I'm not sure if you understand whether or not that yes, a CLI OS is still an OS.

From OpenDarwin's own website literally in the first paragraph:

Quote

Darwin is the Open Source operating system from Apple that forms the basis for macOS, and PureDarwin is a community project to make Darwin more usable (some people think of it as the informal successor to OpenDarwin).

Core components of OS X (encryption, service manager, drivers, frameworks, tools) are not open source.

Duh, why would they be? That has absolutely no bearing on whether or not Darwin is an OS.

15 minutes ago, gabrielcarvfer said:

It is not binary compatible, it doesn't have core libraries nor components

It's literally binary compatible by function. If it wasn't, macOS wouldn't work, lol. Are there proprietary libraries? Obviously. Do you know what these words that you're saying mean?

Release software on Mac is a pain, most people that do release apps are making Mac-exclusive stuff (e.g. pixelmator, coda, etc).

It's not a pain, Macs are absolutely all over the place in the programming world, what rock have you been living under? It's UNIX with Xcode for the most popular platform on the planet, people flock to it. Did you go to school for computer science? If so, did you somehow miss the blinding wall of Apple logos every time you walked into class?

Further, almost every major piece of software (and a whole buttload more) is cross-platform. The idea that people who develop for Mac only release programs on Mac is crazy.

You're referring to Wikipedia... Fine, you don't want to think on what I said but be precise to an unnecessary degree, then lets be precise. Yes, XNU is the kernel and Darwin is the base OS of OS X.

No. Darwin is the OS, XNU is the kernel, that's it. Everything else that's running on top has no relevance to the topic. It's like saying "Debian isn't an OS, Ubuntu is!". The GUI and other components is code running atop the OS.

Yes, but you can't run apps the rely on any OS X framework on these. AFAIK, this includes Xcode and other development/debugging/profiling tools. A.K.A. you can't properly build and test iOS/Mac OS applications with UI.

You can build and run whatever you want going from Darwin -> macOS because they're binary compatible. You can't go in the opposite direction if you're using proprietary features.

It is not the proper term, but whatever, I'm not being paid to give you a lecture.

It's not the proper term because it's clear that you don't know what the proper term is. You're not familiar with the subject matter and struggling to understand the things you are Googling. Would probably be wise not to pick silly fights with people that majored in CS who call you out on your misinformation.

OS X is not UNIX, but UNIX-like.

WHAT?! Where are you reading this?! macOS is absolutely Unix and always has been... The code goes all the way back to Bell Labs and meets the UNIX standard.

Sure, like games, am I right? Oh wait, they are not.
Maybe editors like Atom, music players like Spotify or stuff like that? Nope, all web based applications.
You're focusing only on "major piece of software", when I'm talking about bringing more developers in, which include primarily small/medium development companies.

This is pure ignorance.

Here's 27,000 Mac compatible items on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/search/?os=mac

There isn't some enormous gap in software between platforms. You may have had a point 20 years ago but we live in different times. Mac attracts developers because users spend an order of magnitude more on the platform than on PC.

I think I'm done replying to you, not worth the effort. I suggest researching the topics that you were misinformed on so you can better formulate opinions and debates with others in the future.

Please don't take this argument any further. Regardless of the semantics of what is open source and what is not, Amazon clearly thinks there's a market for running genuine MacOS in the cloud, so lets keep the discussion focussed on that.

I’m surprised Microsoft have yet to do this on Azure, it is odd that they have macOS managed build agents in Azure DevOps but not the ability to have a macOS VM in Azure.

I know macincloud have been running on Mac mini’s for years, I used to use them for build agents prior to Azure DevOps support coming like 3~ years ago.
