QmerK

Hey guys, im gonna be doing a brand new build with the ryzen 5800x, and an asus 570-x tuf motherboard. Do i need to update the bios on the mobo before installing the CPU?

yes most likely youll need to update to the new bios, so youll need another cpu to do the update since this mobo does not have flash bios

Is there a specific reason you went with all B550 boards over the X570 ones?

price and quality of vrms. the b550 boards are newer and on a more mature design and manufacturing process and many of them are better quality than their x570 counterparts. check the motherboard tier list in my signature to convince yourself.

Why are you recommending a terrible board, one that's significantly worse than the tuf plus?

You may need to update the bios, if the board shipped with an old bios that didn't support the new Agesa code for zen 3 cpu's, if so you will need to have a supported Cpu installed to update the bios as this board does not have a bios flashback button.

Assuming the B550 tomahawk is actually 140 USD, then that's a pretty good deal.

Or the X570 tomahawk if you can find it.

All of these boards are good and do have a bios flashback button on the back meaning you can update the bios without having a cpu installed.

Or if you already have the X570 tuf plus, you can ask a computer store to update the bios for you.

PC: Motherboard: ASUS B550M TUF-Plus, CPU: Ryzen 3 3100, CPU Cooler: Arctic Freezer 34, GPU: GIGABYTE WindForce GTX1650S, RAM: HyperX Fury RGB 2x8GB 3200 CL16, Case, CoolerMaster MB311L ARGB, Boot Drive: 250GB MX500, Game Drive: WD Blue 1TB 7200RPM HDD.

Peripherals: GK61 (Optical Gateron Red) with Mistel White/Orange keycaps, Logitech G102 (Purple), BitWit Ensemble Grey Deskpad.

Audio: Logitech G432, Moondrop Starfield, Mic: Razer Siren Mini (White).

Phone: Pixel 3a (Purple-ish).

On B550, the lanes that are wired to the cpu are gen 4, so you'll at least be able to run a gen 4 drive and a 4 gen 4 GPU at PCIE gen 4 on B550.

On X570, the lanes that are wired to both the cpu and to the chipset are gen 4, so you get gen 4 across the whole board, so unless you need the extra gen 4 lanes on X570, you wont really be missing out by going with B550.

PC: Motherboard: ASUS B550M TUF-Plus, CPU: Ryzen 3 3100, CPU Cooler: Arctic Freezer 34, GPU: GIGABYTE WindForce GTX1650S, RAM: HyperX Fury RGB 2x8GB 3200 CL16, Case, CoolerMaster MB311L ARGB, Boot Drive: 250GB MX500, Game Drive: WD Blue 1TB 7200RPM HDD.

If you want and if you can find one, availability for this board is quite bad but if you can find one you can go for it, it's a solid board, or any of the other boards I linked above.
