Summary

General Article about component shortages across the computer component space covering RAM, SSD, CPU and GPU. There was a reported shortage on substrates for GPUs and CPUs on Digitimes in September which seems to directly hit AMD. Intel and Nvidia seem to get hihger allocations from the japanese suplier Ajinomoto.

So there may be more problems than producing the chips itself. Not sure but this with other supply chain issues might affect the delivery.

This is a perennial problem with non commodity products.  One big fire can destroy an industry.  There was a latex factory that burned and made latex mattresses unbuyable for 10 years.  There was a battery factory that burned down about 10 years ago and changed the entire battery industry.  Blowback from that one was that it killed people on entirely different continents and kept doing it for years.  the new batteries were more powerful and lots more dangerous.  The devices designed for the old batteries couldn’t always handle the new ones.  People died.  When a lithium battery goes into thermal runaway in an enclosed metal container you’ve got an incindiary  hand grenade.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

I bought some NiMH AA batteries for my XBox controller, and was thinking about LiPO instead, but I don't want my controller to catch on fire, so I ended up just sticking with NiMH in the end. :D

NiMH is less dangerous than LiPo because it’s less energetic and has better safety systems usually, but all batteries wear out.  The danger sign is when they stop holding charge.  If you leave them full and they’re dead a week later and it wasn’t the device drawing off power it’s time to recycle them.  The big thing about LiPo is it absolutely HAS to have electronic control systems to keep it stable.   Used to be the rule of thumb for a battery was 300 cycles.  That’s changed a lot though.  The tesla aluminum magnesium 2070s can do 10,000.

Sadly, I made the mistake of getting NiMH batteries from a Batteries Plus retailer, and they're the awful quality Nuon brand. Granted, I was going through a pair of non-rechargeable AA's in a single 18 hour gaming period, so basically a pair a day, and the NiMH last 2-3 times longer on a full charge, plus I don't have to constantly buy new ones. They're less than two months old, and still hold about 98% of their original charge, plus, they don't drain after sitting unused, but fully charged, for a week or more.

 

Once these show signs of degradation, I'll buy some of the best rated, similarly priced NiMH batteries from Japan. I wish I had read the handful of articles before I bought these, instead of after... They aren't terrible, but they aren't great, either.

Counterfeit batteries have become a big problem.  They can be very difficult to detect.  The highest grade batteries are generally the most counterfeited because why not.  Finding a retailer that properly secures its supply chain can be arduous. I’ve found counterfeit batteries at high end ecig stores and the shop owners swore up and down they were real.  The problem was their supplier was the one that got taken.  I’ve had good luck with liion wholesale.  It’s been a while though. They may not be good anymore.  There’s supposed to be one in the UK that is also pretty good.  One of the giveaways of counterfeit batteries is internal resistance.  It’s a bitch to check though.  You need equipment to do it, and even then you need to charge a battery all the way up and run it all the way down while testing when it is brand new, then as it ages. A fake battery will start with slightly higher internal resistance and it will go up as it ages faster than it should.

I was playing mudrunner. It's a brand new Microsoft XBox One controller, using bluetooth. No idea. I thought it was high battery use, but I get 3-5 days of gaming out of the NiMH batteries.

They found counterfeit bolts on the two VC-25 the United States Government uses as Airforce One.

There’s a youtuber named batterymooch that does a bunch of testing.  I think he’s pretty good. Batteries are so hard to make that the fake ones generally are just Chinese cells, unless you get something totally wacky, which does happen occasionally.  Battery cases filled with nothing but sand, etc..  the main issue is something called rewrapping.  Many cells just use a shrink wrap sleeve to identify them and the sleeves are cheap. Anyone can order a couple thousand printed.

this problem is out of control. I've done the same thing, and had the same results, just ended up buying racing drone battery's and a mod box, it's beyond ridiculous

Yeah, I watched a few of his AA rechargeable batteries videos, which is why I decided that when these Nuon units die, I'll get something that he recommended.

I don’t really game much myself, and my remaining working NIMH cells are already in use, so I just stuck a spare pair of the Energizer Lithium batteries in my 360 controller. It seem to complain less about the batteries being low, as well. 
 

My sister’s new flashlight draws a whopping 4 amps from a single AA cell at full power, so I imagine my remaining set isn’t long for this world either.

Lithium batteries are expensive here, so that was considered, but not an option. 😧

I got lucky with my 1/2AA battery in my Power Mac G4 - it is lithium and it didn't leak.

It has zero charge tho - doesn't even trigger my battery tester.

And it's 3.6V running on a 1.5V tester.

I own a Zebralight SC600FC IV Plus, and it sees a lot of use on a daily basis, from work, late night walks (I live in a more rural area), wondering the house at night without searing my eyes, and the 0.15 lumen mode makes a great night light. Once the local theatre gets running again, I’ll end up using it a lot there too. At 4000K, the color temperature is closer to a highly driven halogen bulb than a standard Incandescent. 
 

At full output (<1800 lumen), the power draw exceeds 20 watts, which kind of takes all mobile sensibilities that exist, and tosses them straight put the window. In a few minutes, the body of the light gets very hot to the touch.
 

I’d also been asked to write a brief review/photograph another flashlight, with a sample currently in the mail. Apparently, someone out there likes my photos and/or writing skill enough to ask for my opinion. 🤷‍♀️

LiPos are rather dangerous regardless of quality control. RC hobbyist know this all too well. Drones and buggies will burst into flames upon impact. Sometimes they just swell (pillowing) and short too. It's such a safety issue that one company created the Bat Safe to store them in.

This was the reason I kept NiMH in my RC Rock Crawler. I did an oopsie and ran the thing in the snow, then tried charging the battery while it was still rather cold, and killed the pack...

There was a guy on youtube that made a LED flashlight that was bright enough that it could cause eye damage at around a mile distance when at full brightness. I kinda want to do something like that as a project, though I would probably pare it down so it wasn't stupid bright.

The Zebralight is ridiculously powerful for something that’s so small. From the other side, the area covered is not unlike a vehicle’s high beams. It’s kind of difficult to appreciate the quantity of light unless you observe from the other side some distance away.

LiPos are one of the the least safe chemistries,  the issue is it’s currently the most powerful, the simplest, and the only one that can be molded into any shape.  Glass batteries can do some of these things but they’re still experimental.  Basically almost any square battery is LiPo. The others are all “strip” batteries based off a system created originally by Polaroid for its instant cameras.  Round cylindrical batteries are often strip batteries that have been rolled up.  The cylinder can also be flattened making a flattish battery but with 2 rounded sides.  One of the oddities of strip batteries is because of the rolling they can be effectively made with a hole through the center.  There is at least one ecig design that takes advantage of this.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

There was a guy on youtube that made a LED flashlight that was bright enough that it could cause eye damage at around a mile distance when at full brightness. I kinda want to do something like that as a project, though I would probably pare it down so it wasn't stupid bright.

Would take some serious cold to do that.  Might have been the water or the temperature difference between the inside of the pack and the outside.  Either way, still snow.
