Ryzen 5900x cursor lag in Windows

Update

Turns out it was GSync. While GSync is active, the cursor drops to 10ish FPS while hovering over any 'not active' windows. Problem is gone completely with deactivated GSync.

As a workaround I set up GSync to only activate with games.

I still don't know if it's the CPU, GPU or Monitor tho.

Hey there! Looking for someone with similiar problems, potential causes, and a fix.

I experience horrible lag while moving the cursor over certain program windows. The bevahior is compareable to very low FPS.

Examples:

  • moving the cursor around in Cinebench (as soon as the cursor isn't over CB anymore, but on Windows, everything is smooth - CB Scores are really good anyways)
  • same with Ryzen Master, Gigabyte App Center, ...
  • Adobe Programs (Photoshop, Illustrator, ...) work perfectly smooth. As soon as I hover the cursor over the settings menu at the top, the lag happens. Lag stops as soon as the cursor isn't above the menu bar anymore.

Windows and all the mentioned programs are located on the same M.2 SSD.

Notes:

  • The system is newly built
  • Windows is fresh installed
  • Divers are up to date
  • Benchmarks are -very- good
  • Temperatures are as expected
  • Lag doesnt happen in games (different SSD)

System:

  • Ryzen 5900x
  • Rtx 3080 FE
  • Gigabyte B550 Vision D
  • 4 sticks Trident Z 3600-16 B-Die @3600
  • Corsair AX1000
  • GSync Monitor @ 144Hz

Everything at stock except XMP, FLKC (1800)

Thanks for any input! This wonky behavior is driving me nuts :[

Hey, thanks for the reply. I just booted into safe mode, but can't recreate the problem, because all of the affected programs won't start while in safe mode.

hmm... im suspecting probably something went wrong when u installed the OS and my suggestion is to try reinstalling it again

maybe others would have a better solution before having to nuke your OS

Funny enough I just fixed the problem.

Turns out it was GSync. While GSync is active, the cursor drops to 10ish FPS while hovering over any 'not active' window. Problem is gone completely with deavtivated GSync.

Jeah, never had that problem before. But I'm on a new gpu and cpu ... No idea. I'll activate GSync only with games instead of leaving it active.

Good enough workaround for the moment.

Thanks for your effort tho!

Will try that. I suspect the 6-7 year old Monitor tho.

AOC G2460PG is an official GSync monitor, but afaik it was one of the first. I'd imagine that the RTX3080 isn't adressing it correctly.

My new monitors will arive tomorrow, maybe that fixes it aswell.

did the new monitor fix it? im in a similar seat with a old gsync monitor but i do have a 2020 LG gsync tv too. My cursor start lagging after i wake it up after sleep. when i disabled gsync first time it got fixed for the current session but next time it happened it didn't seem to do anything.. Some might say its vlc that starts it when it is on and pc goes to sleep but dunno so time consuming to test all the possible stuff..

really weird problem. the cursor lag only on image change of the cursor so if you move the mouse to somewhere where it changes cursor image like links or text or the resize window cursor it stutters. i have a animated cursor which is like a gif with 8 frames so when i had that on it lags like crazy.

This never happened on intel and this is my first time with ryzen/amd.
