My Old HP S5000 SFF from 2011 is now a Sleeper PC

Hello everyone!

Below is my finally finished build (been working on it for the last 6 months or so - kind of a covid project)

It's all new parts other than the case.

Specs:

Ryzen 5 3600

ASUS TUF B450M Gaming Micro ATX Motherboard

16GB HyperX DDR4 2666MHZ RAM

Seasonic 450 Watt SFX Gold Power Supply

AMD Wraith Spire CPU Cooler

256 GB Kingston NVME Hard Drive

1 TB 7200 RPM Storage Hard Drive

Nvidia GTX 1650 4 GB SFF Video Card

Windows 10 Home

The finished product

1777572336_IMG_20201201_2037365571.thumb.jpg.2a15bb6d7588876dc54e7e36d2756d87.jpg

All built in a HP S5000 Small Form Factor Case from 2010

What I did:

Gutted the original power supply. Cut off the side for airflow to the GPU (see pic). Made a pass through for the power cable to go to the relocated power supply. Added a Noctua Chromax fan where the original power supply had one.

Relocated the power supply inside of the case where the intake fan was originally.

Mounted the SFF power supply where the intake fan was originally. Used the original fan mount with 4 nuts as standoffs for the Power supply mounting points. It looks like it belongs there..lol

Modded the original DVD tray for a 1 TB Hard Drive - built a new mount for the Hard Drive that fit where the DVD drive went.

Swapped out the original power LED for a red one.

Cut up an expansion port cover, painted, and then installed it on a unused knock out on the back for improved airflow.

Cut out a section of the bottom front of the front bezel for better airflow. it is hidden behind the bottom part of the bezel.

I kept the original stickers on the front of the bezel (the AMD, Nvidia, and the Windows 7 ones)

I added new Ryzen, Geforce, and Windows 10 stickers to the rear of the case by the power supply cable power conection. It's funny, the new ones mirror the old ones - they are just 10 years newer. lol again

Finally, I hid all of the cables.

Final thoughts

The USB ports and the SD card reader work on the front bezel.

Fallout 76 (I know, but its much better now..lol) averages right at 60 FPS at 1080P with most everything cranked up.

It averages 56 FPS at 1080P (with most everything turned up) in the Rise of the Tomb raider demo

The system ran a 3926 on Time Spy

It did jump up to 95 C on the Prime95 torture test but it mostly stayed in the 80's. It stays in the 60's during regular gaming.

All in all, I would say that's a pretty big jump over an AMD system from 2011 :)

Now imagine painting the interior black prior to assembly and giving it a glass/acrylic side panel... delish. Also love how perfect the fans line up with the original side panel.

That’s a good idea! As for the fans and such. I guess I just lucked into the mounting locations. Especially the SFF power supply.

Looking to make another build in one of these cases when a faster sff gpu comes out. Thinking about using 2 nvme ssd’s and cutting a hole and throwing another fan where the hard drive was.

I even had room to hide all of the cables under the hard drive.

This is a sign of a true follower of the SFF way hahah. Yeah it looked clean from that photo
