When building a new PC, which part(s) is most likely to be DOA?

I see loads of posts about certain parts being dead on arrival. However, I have now built my 5th PC and all parts have been fine when bought brand new.

I've never had a part DOA yet.

So got me wondering, what parts are most common for DOA?

My best guess is probably HDDs as they're the most fragile. Though I personally never experienced anything DOA. Only defective like a monitor having dead pixels.

Yeah been seeing this alot. I was going to buy the new Samsung G7 monitor but literally every post about it is something to do with issues with it on arrival unless you get lucky.

So just going to hold out until more 1440p 240Hz monitors are on the market.

If you drop it and damage it it's not DOA.

You: "I better shake them to see if they're okay"

Guess I lucked out with my Samsung CJG52. Though... I did purposely drive out to the neighboring city to pick it up since they ran out of stock at my local store. So at least I know it wasn't drop kicked on the way hahahaa.

If they are dead/unreliable and you can't return them, take them apart and turn their platters into Christmas ornaments.
It's quite pretty.

DOA parts are not very common, the reason it might seem like you hear about them a lot is because people are much more likely to say something about a defective part. For example most people who buy a new power supply aren't going to make a post about it, most would only make a post if it doesn't work. I also don't think a lot of parts are actually DOA, just people that either improperly handle parts and kill them themselves, or aren't aware of incompatible parts, though that's just a hunch with no data to back it up.

Yeah... I wouldn't store any data you care about on those drives even if they do work.

Seriously most likely the human is the error:

Ordering incompatible parts, not knowing about a firmware update, using excessive forces on screws or connectors, dropping the part, bad luck with ESD, etc.

Can you hang them from your vehicles rear view mirror like they used to do with DVDs to ward off speed radar? 😜

I don't have enough yet, plus I don't have a car.

I have a total of 5 - 3 from a 3.5" and 2 from a 2".

I could return them if they were broke and just blame it on shipping.

In my experience, motherboards and hard drives are probably the most common I've seen. (34 years old, building/repairing PCs for roughly 20 years as hobby and business). But as pointed out, you only really hear about the defective ones, and not the thousands of perfectly fine parts for every couple lemons. I've been pretty lucky personally and professionally with parts, but mobos and HDDs are definitely the ones that stick out more.

I'd say RAM is probably the next tier down, with graphics cards being even more rare.

ya me and my dad have seen most parts fail. ram, hhd,mb,psu, gpus, after along time monitor. seems to me that that hi end mb seem to fail more often. my dad got like 3 radion gpus dont remember witch ones but they had a 5 year warranty on them and they die once a year or so and he keeps rma them... but some point we upgrade so w/e was left went to my moms pc. i got my dads hammy downs. and at one point we had almost the same pc. but he would have to buy more parts just to test witch parts were causing problems and if you didn't run prime 95 your probably wont no your ram was bad. there a few parts we fried are self thow... after like 15 years your old mb caps bulge and old gpus like pci and agp seem to just die. and gpus would last about 4 years or so. but now a days your most likely out grown your pc before it dies. never had a cpu die thow i think. but im also talking about pcs before the x56 like p4 and amd athon  times.

I have dyslexia plz be kind to me. dont like my post dont read it or respond thx
