What are the exact benefits to downloading AMD chipset drivers?

So from what little ive heard is that downloading the chipset drivers will add the ryzen optimized power plans to windows. Being balanced and high performance. Aside from those, what else exactly are the benefits to downloading them?

 

With the power plans, some have said that they dont really matter anymore and that its better to use the windows plans. also on the topic of power plans, some have said that using balanced actually is better than using performance. and for some reason the ryzen high performance plan disappeared for me.

You need it to even run the OS properly. Many examples of systems with outdated chipset drivers causing the system to crash randomly.

really? cuz me with a 1600 on b350 has been fine for over a year. idk how relevant this is but ive DDUed my pc for a gpu upgrade and added an ssd. (just adding that if it is somehow relevant)

2 of my friends i helped them with building both have 3600s on b550 and iirc they both dont have chipset drivers downloaded too and they both seem to be fine. only notable problem ive noticed from them is that one of them says that their refresh rate seems to always change, but i kinda doubt that its related to that. then again im no expert so i could be wrong.

Better power management first of all. I can't say I know all the improvements they have done since I haven't read any changelogs but.... here is a random one I guess..

Removed deprecated device IDs from the IOV driver

Removed deprecated device IDs from the USB 3.0 driver

General system stability improvements

 

Fixed Issues

Installer may hang during installation progress

Installer may abort with “Error 1720” code

Installation will not install on a non C:\ location

Resolved screen rotation bug with select AMD mobile processors

Rare system halt on 7th Gen AMD A-Series APUs

 

Also motherboard manufacturers may put their own tweaks inside the chipset driver/software. Well... AM4 has been out for a good while now. I doubt there will be much critical to fix in the future. As suggested by this, doesn't seem critical to me.

 

Known Issues

  • Manual system restart required on Non-English OS after installation is completed.
  • Windows Installer pop-up message may appear during install.
  • Uninstallation log may not be generated in silent mode.

You can look into BIOS download pages for older motherboards, they will urge you to use chipset drivers after a certain patch for some BIOS updates. Same for the OS, when OS updates itself it can have problems until you update the chipset driver.

Windows automatically install the basic chipset drivers after every OS installation for it to work.

Manual installation ensures you getting the latest drivers.

Old drivers may work, but bugs may happens, in which you may or may not notice.

Windows do update the drivers, but not as frequent as the native one, probably only once a year.

Ah that makes sense. What about if u upgrade? Is it kinda like gpu drivers where u should ddu it? Or like if u dl, say b550, would it just overwrite or take priority or something, over b350

Pretty much yeah. Of course one can look at the changelog before deciding to update but at that stage you may as well just update.

 

What I recommend people is to first install chipset drivers from the motherboard page because some as I said add their own motherboard specific things to them and then update from AMD website. To show you what I mean by Asus for instance adding to the driver software.

 

For my motherboard Asus have this chipset driver, notice the size.

I can see what you mean it may and probably is included in the AMD all in 1 with VGA driver ver:19.10.16_19H1_WHQL but it may also be that they don't have chipset drivers in which case you can go to AMD website but try the AMD all in 1 one and don't install the VGA driver. It will probably say what is included if you don't see chipset driver there or anything useful at all just cancel the installation and head to amd.com for your drivers.

yeah i downloaded the one from amd a few days ago, i was just wondering if i overlooked a specific one for my motherboard. thanks!
