Opinions on Seasonic PRIME GX 1000?

FarmerGiles97

Just looking to get some opinions on this power supply supply, and wanted to get opinions on this. The tier lsit confuses me abit as there is a prime listed in tier a, but GX is listed as tier 2?

Will be using it to power a 3900x and 3080.

Overkill as fuck. Even a 750w power supply will be overkill considering a rtx 3080 draws around 300w and a 3900x draws 150 which = 450 and even if the rest of your system draws 100w you'll still be drawing 550w which a 650w psu will handle just fine or a 750 for headroom for overclocking and upgrade ability.

That's a really nice unit. I consider this one for myself when my current 1Kw decides to die on me..

But I agree with Gundar, the wattage is way overkill.

You want to be drawing around 60% of your PSUs capacity in order for it to be preforming at maximum efficiency, so yes it will be overkill, but it will be preforming at maximum efficiency. Also a 3080 recommends a 750w PSU.

Refer to this graph on the efficiency of the PSU, it shows max efficiency at around 500W which is 50% of max capacity

Looks good, has lots of connections and ive heard good things about seasonic! Just was a reliable PSU seeing as my currect RM650 has lasted for 5/6 years and ive been through two systems on it!

My PSU's are beyond the warranty of 7 years.

The daily rig is 850w Antec CP series and the Bench 1Kw is also CP series.

Dang things 10 years old.... So time is coming. I'm just riding the wave out XD.

Was looking at the Seasonic Focus line up. Since I do deal with extreme overclocking, having big juice matters. So 1Kw is going to be minimum.

Have an EVGA 750w bronze that's 3 years old. Powers a 2700X and 2060. Doing fine, on daily all day every day...... kids + htpc = lots of run hours.

The efficiency of a psu depends on the psu. The corsair rm750 for example efficiency graph has a 92% efficiency at 300w and about 91% at 750w which is literally no difference so just get a cheaper psu with a better effiency curve. Also nvidia recommends a 750w psu as a worst case scenario if you're running an overclocked 10900k and 3080.

I'm an over-kill guy. 850w when NV recommends 750w.

(Always assume pump rads case fans and lighting.)

My fans are rated 1.6A each. Delta is no joke. lol.

Yeah i run 9 fans, AIO ect! 3080 seems to draw alot of power too so id prefer to go overkill. Always good to future proof for future components too!

I'm pretty sure you're a bit of a special case running delta fans

Well a 750w power supply is already overkill

You know if you really think you need that 1 kilo watt power supply to run a normal computer go ahead I am too guilty of over specking my psu though to be fair I got a super flower 3 leadex gold 850w for 110 dollars on black friday.

didnt cost me too much though, and i plan on using it for a 2080ti or better if i can ever get my hands on something nice. headroom is always nice!

topics i need help on:

Spoiler

my "oops i bought intel right before zen 3 releases" build

CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 (placeholder)

Memory: 2x16gb GSkill Trident Z RGB 3600C16, 14-15-30-288@1.45v

Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix X570-E Gaming

Cooler: Noctua NH-D15S w/ white chromax bling
