Should I go with a 3900xt or wait for the 5900x

I want to upgrade my i5 7400 and I don't know if i should wait till 5900x's actually get back in stock or if I should buy a 3900xt

if the choices are strictly between those 2, i would wait for the 5900x, unless you need one asap.

The 5900X is significantly faster than the 3900XT. Unless you need need a system I'd wait for the 5900X.

Are you only gaming?  I'd just get the 5600x, since you only listed games in your upgrade post previously.

 

5900x for gaming is not financially sound move.

Yes. 6 cores is enough for gaming.

Especially with the fast 5600x single cores performance.

Wait for 5000 series. Ryzen 3000 was cool, but what really impressed me was Ryzen 5000. I've personally opted for Ryzen 5800X in the end. I figured I don't really need that many threads given the price increase was around 200€. I mean, currently with 5820K at 6c/12t I was doing just fine thread wise. 5800X has 8c/16t. It's plenty for my needs. What I was waiting for more was the sweet IPC boost as well as more consistent and higher boost clocks. That's what makes Ryzen 5000 so much better. Don't get me wrong, 3900X is still a very good CPU, but if you've waited for so long, why not do a bit more and treat yourself with a really good one. I used same reasoning and now I have the system ordered as I stumbled upon some 5800X's in stock in a local store. I was so used to looking in German stores I never even looked at my local ones. Probabkly a bit more expensive, but it's available for shipping now so I'm fine with that.
