EVGA Supernova GT 750W vs EVGA Supernova G3 850W

CommandoPants

I have an EVGA Supernova G3 850W from my old build and my new build is using a EVGA Supernova GT 750W I just bought to put it together. I plan on selling my old system as a whole and that's why I bought a new PSU. Which PSU is better and should I swap the EVGA Supernova G3 850W into my new build?

Also anyone know if the modular cables need to be re-run if I swap them or can I just unplug the cables from the PSU base since they are both EVGA branded?

I'm not concerned much about the 100W difference, just want to keep the better quality PSU.

Both of these PSUs are in the Tier A of the PSU tier list so it is up to you whether you want to go with the GT (A lower wattage one) or keep your G3 around.

I am not sure if EVGA keeps the same pinout going from the PSU to the cables so I would highly recommend that you swap the cables out if you plan on swapping the PSUs. Keep the GT cables with the GT unit and G3 cables with the G3 unit only.

what are the specs of the older and new systems?

@Tom_nerd

New System

AMD Ryzen 5 5600X

Nvidia GTX 970 (Will be Nvidia RTX 3070 or AMD 6800 XT when available)

16GB RAM

500GB SSD

EVGA Supernova GT 750W

Old System

Intel i7-4790k

Will be Nvidia GTX 970 once current gen GPUs are available

16GB RAM

500GB SSD

EVGA Supernova G3 850W

After some looking on the forums I heard that the Supernova G3 850W is known to blow up with RTX 3000 series GPUs? Is that only true for the 3080 or would the 3070 have the same issues?

@CommanderAlex Well I thought the EVGA GT doesn't have an actual tier defined? See screen shot below from the PSU tier list spreadsheet to correct me if I'm wrong.

@Tom_nerd & @CommanderAlex I just found out I can get a Corsair RM750x 750W Fully Modular PSU for $10 less than the EVGA Supernova GT 750W so I'm guessing that's the better idea?

I'd have to go to the store to return it of course, but I'd much rather have a better PSU for that little bit of effort.
